The Padres put outfielder Carlos Quentin on the 15-day disabled list with a strained knee before the second game of their series against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night. It's the second significant setback to San Diego's lineup this week. All-Star shortstop Everth Cabrera was suspended for 50 games for taking a banned substance. The switch-hitting leadoff hitter leads the NL with 37 steals. Quentin missed the last seven games with the injured right knee, which wasn't improving. He was batting .275 with a team-leading 45 RBIs and 13 homers, second to Will Venable for the team lead. Outfielder Jaff Decker was called up from Triple-A Tucson. The left-handed hitter batted .293 with nine homers and 38 RBIs for Tucson. It's his third stint with San Diego this season.

See Chase. See Nate. See Chase Chase Nate.

Chase Headley is making history this year. On July 24, in Milwaukee, he played his 552nd career game at third base for the Padres. This pushed him past Luis Salazar as the franchise leader in games played at the hot corner. Did you know that Salazar had been the leader? I did, but I’m weird that way. Now Headley is chasing another record. Nate Colbert has the most strikeouts (773...

While You Were Dreaming: Game 114 (Padres vs Phillies)

The last time August 8th fell on a Thursday was 2002.  Had Padres Public existed back then, here’s how the game summary might have read. The Padres concluded this six-game home stand on a high note.  It didn’t start out looking like they would. Brian Lawrence started and made it into the sixth, however thanks to Rickey Ledee’s big day at the plate (double and triple) he departed...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-11-13

3 different farm teams enjoyed 1-run victories tonight. Hunter Renfroe and Gabriel Quintana provided a solid 1-2 punch in the middle of the TinCap lineup. Renfroe had 2 hits, including a home run, while Quintana was a perfect 4-4 in the TinCaps’ 4-3 victory. Starter Johnny Barbato and Payton Baskette dominated for the Storm and the AZL Padres, respectively. Hitting Prospect of...

San Diego Padres sign Can-Am League's batting leader

The Can-Am League announced that Bridger Hunt, the league's leading hitter, has signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres. This will be Hunt's second time in affiliated ball. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 9th round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of Central Missouri. Hunt spent five years in the Dodger's organization...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-10-13

For the second night in a row the TinCaps were the only team to lose down on the farm. Despite the losing effort, Hunter Renfroe still played very well in his Fort Wayne debut. Both the Emeralds and the Storm enjoyed walk-off victories while the T-Pads won 6-2 due to a strong start from Keyvius Sampson and a great offensive performance from Reymond Fuentes. Hitting Prospect of the...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-9-13

Burch Smith was strong in the T-Pads close victory over the Zephyrs. For the second night in a row, the Missions blew out the Travelers. Not to be outdone, the Storm and the Emeralds both crushed their opponents in their impressive victories. The only team that lost tonight was the TinCaps, and they only lost by 1 run. Hitting Prospect of the Day: Tommy Medica Pitching Prospect...

Since the Diamondbacks quit on their fans, Ian Kennedy has impressed as a San Diego Padre

Although receiving a no-decision, San Diego Padres pitcher Ian Kennedy continued to impress Sunday in a 3-2 loss against the Reds in Cincinnati. Yielding only two runs over eight innings, the 28-year-old Kennedy (4-8, 5.14 ERA) stifled Cincinnati’s powerful lineup. In a remarkably poor decision, the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Kennedy to San Diego last month in exchange for Joe...

Indoctrination 101: How Will I Know?

There are certain areas of life where beliefs must be arrived upon using one’s own freewill. Padres baseball is not one of those areas. Summer months move along with a particular cadence in my home.  Children’s activities separate each passing hour of the day, establishing a familiar rhythm, until we sit down for dinner and then prepare to watch the beginning of the Padres games...

Daily Friar 8.9.13

The Padres had a much needed day off yesterday after being swept in the two game series by the Orioles. Overall they went 4-4 on the home stand against the Reds, Yankees and Os. Now they are set to start a stretch of thirteen games that starts with a road trip to Cincinnati and Denver before coming back home to face the Mets and Pirates. I hate to say it Padres fans, but this could...

Daily Friar 8.10.13

The Padres are in a bit of a tough stretch right now as they have dropped their third game in a row. This has been one streaky season as either the team is really hot or really cold; there really is no middle ground. Last weekend against the Yankees they managed to score runs in bunches. Lately though it’s been a couple runs if we are lucky. Yesterday saw the Reds beat up on Andrew...

Padres-Rockies Preview

Sweeping a series from one of the best teams in baseball has the Colorado Rockies gaining momentum. Hosting the sputtering San Diego Padres could keep them rolling. The Rockies look to continue their success against the Padres in the opener of this three-game series Monday night. Colorado (55-64) and San Diego (53-64) are practically out of postseason contention barring an outstanding...

Taking The Blame

First things first: I’m sorry for ruining the season. Six weeks ago I wrote about the Padres being buyers at the trade deadline, and they didn’t win a game for over a week. Two weeks ago, I wrote about how relatively durable Carlos Quentin had been this season, and how keeping him could end up paying dividends going forward. Quentin subsequently missed that night’s game, hasn’t...

New Digital Sketch: The Double-Nickel

Finally drew one today of our beloved Mark “Mudcat” Grant. This picture is from a combination of a few photos I found of Grant pitching for the Padres. I used both the 6B and graphite shader brushes on procreate app for iPad. Really happy to get a drawing in my portfolio of number 55. He’s an all-time fave of mine.
