San Diego Padres
Colorado closer Rex Brothers has felt off in recent days. Chase Headley made him pay for it.
Brothers gave up Headley's leadoff homer in the ninth inning to tie the game and pinch-hitter Jesus Guzman then singled in the winning run, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 4-3 victory over the Rockies on Friday night.
''You make bad pitches, you get beat in this league,'' Brothers said. ''I don't know if I made a single (good) pitch.''
Brothers (2-1) fell behind 2-0, then grooved a fastball that Headley hit off the facing of the third deck of the brick Western Metal Supply Co. building in left field to tie the game at 3-all for his 10th homer.
''He's a guy you don't want to get deep in the count with,'' Headley said. ''I could afford to look for (a fastball). 2-0, you're looking for a fastball, middle in and fortunately, he threw it there.''
Guzman's single with the bases loaded and one out, went o...

Jhoulys Chacin has three wins and 28 strikeouts with a 2.62 ERA over his last five starts. He’s owned in only 50 percent of Yahoo! leagues. (Getty Images) Chacin is enjoying a nice season for the Rockies posting a 13-8 record with a respectable 3.16 ERA. He has won four of his last seven starts and over his last 11 Chacin has surrendered more than three runs only once. Two starts...
Matt BelisleIt's easy to blame Matt Belisle. The reliever has been a shell of himself since before the All-Star Break. The Colorado Rockies have asked him to get the job done in several high pressure situations, and frankly, he hasn't gotten it done. With Belisle more than willing to admit that he didn't get his job done, what Rockies fans are really seeing is that the...
Todd Helton's heroics were wasted again on Friday. In a way, it seems fitting for Todd Helton's career. His heroics are overshadowed by someone else on the Colorado Rockies failing, and therefore taking the spotlight off of him.On Friday night in San Diego, Helton made up for an earlier error, which allowed the Padres to score the game-tying run, by drilling a Huston Street...
His season-long slump alive and well in September Chase Headley still can’t put a finger on one thing that’s dogged throughout this frustrating campaign.
The Padres’ third baseman does know that one good swing can turn a bad night into a good one – just like that.
Sitting on three strikeouts Headley led off the ninth inning with a mammoth game-tying homer off the third...
The Rockies want to see what veteran Roy Oswalt has left. To that end the 36-year-old right-hander will pitch in a middle relief role in Sunday's game against the Padres. He will enter the game behind starter Chad Bettis.
"I'm up to about 70 75 pitches but I'd like to get that stretched out. But I'm feeling good now. I'm eager to get out there" said...

Cameron Maybin had already been ruled out for the rest of the 2013 season when he decided to undergo wrist surgery, but he had at least hoped to play some winter ball to get ready for 2014. Now that's in jeopardy too, as Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the San Diego Padres outfielder was diagnosed with an injury to his triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), discovered...
Both the Missions and the TinCaps endured losses tonight. They both played in close games as they lost by a combined 3 runs. The Missions were unable to get a clutch hit while the TinCaps endured sloppy defense which allowed 3 unearned runs to score.

When Andrew Cashner came to the Padres in a January 2012 trade that sent first baseman Anthony Rizzo to the Cubs, fans in San Diego were not amused. Rizzo, part of the haul for Adrián González, posted X-rated numbers in the hitters paradise known as Tucson and gave folks hope for a future brighter than anything Brad Hawpe or Jorge Cantú had to offer.
Rizzo struggled in his first...
Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. This especially applies if you attended Padres Beerfest.
The Padres defeated the Rockies in the bottom of the 9th inning by a score of 4-3 on a walk-off “hit” from Jesus Guzman. Chase Headley had 3 strikeouts in 3 at-bats before tying...
There is more to Jedd Gyorko than the bat and the ability to play second base.
The Padres love the baseball instincts of their rookie infielder.
“He knows how the game is played how it works” Padres manager Bud Black said recently of Gyorko. “He is ahead when it comes to baseball instincts. He knows.”
Saturday night all facets of Gyorko’s game came into play as the Padres...
Rookie Jedd Gyorko hit a go-ahead homer leading off the eighth inning to give the San Diego Padres a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.
Gyorko's shot off Matt Belisle (5-6) came right after the Rockies tied the game at 1 in the eighth inning on a San Diego error.
Gyorko's 17th home run just barely cleared the right field wall as it hit the top padding...

Most people cringe when they hear Roy Halladay say the M-word (Moyer, of course), but not me. Jamie Moyer is one of my favorite pitchers of all-time and do you know why? Because he won with effort and smarts, not super human, God-given ability. I’m fascinated to watch Doc attempt to transform himself for the second time, because if he can keep his ERA under four with this velocity...
