The San Diego Padres have sent right-handed reliever Ernesto Frieri to the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Alexi Amarista and right-hander Donn Roach, both minor leaguers. Frieri was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 11 appearances before Thursday's trade. He was the longest tenured player in the Padres organization, signing as a non-drafted free agent at 17 in January 2003. The native of Colombia made his big league debut with San Diego in 2009. The Padres will fill his spot on the 25-man roster Friday before the opener of a home series against the Miami Marlin. Amarista hit .273 with12 RBIs in 18 games for Triple-A Salt Lake. He'll be assigned to Tucson. Roach was 5-0 with a 2.16 ERA with Class-A Inland Empire.

Angels acquire reliever Frieri from Padres

The Los Angeles Angels obtained right-handed pitcher Ernesto Frieri from the San Diego Padres in a trade that brought minor league infielder Alexi Amarista and minor league right-handed pitcher Donn Roach to San Diego, the Angeles announced Thursday. Frieri, 26, is 1-0 with a 2.31 earned run average in 11 appearances for the Padres this season. He has 18 strikeouts in 11 2/3...

Padres place LHP Luebke on DL with strained elbow

The San Diego Padres have placed left-hander Cory Luebke on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left elbow. Luebke, who is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA, said he began to feel soreness in his elbow during his last start, a 5-3 win Friday at San Francisco. To replace him as San Diego's starter on Wednesday night against Milwaukee, the Padres purchased the contract of right...

Angels acquire Ernesto Frieri, finally get Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow some help

What Jerry Dipoto wants, Jerry Dipoto gets.  As if the Pujols and Wilson signings didn't show us that already, the Angels GM went out and proved it once more by acquiring young, talented power reliever Ernesto Frieri from the San Diego Padres in order to bolster the Angels Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow. While one reliever isn't going to fix the bullpen, Frieri is a major...

2012 Fantasy Baseball: Padres' Anthony Bass Underowned Value?

Anthony Bass (credits below) I posted this blind resume on Twitter the other day: Player A:  1 W, 8.89 K/9, 3.23 xFIP (owned in 13% Y!) Player B: 2 W, 8.53 K/9, 3.28 xFIP (owned in 100% Y!) Player C: 2 W, 8.34 K/9, 3.28 xFIP (owned in 100% Y!) I was looking for my followers to try and identify Player A, who was owned in 87% less leagues than Player B (Felix Hernandez) and...

Padres Issue Statement on Junior Seau

“Everyone in the Padres organization is deeply saddened by the news of Junior Seau’s passing,” said Padres President Tom Garfinkel.  “He was a great San Diegan and an inspiration, not only on the playing field, but in how he positively impacted people's lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Seau family, friends and the Chargers organization during this difficult time.”

Daily Friar 5.4.12

The Padres had an off day yesterday, but that didn't meant they stayed quiet. The trade market was all a buzz yesterday as the Padres made a move with the Angels. I won't spoil anything here if you haven't read about it yet, but the article is below on who was moved. Most of the team was busy yesterday as well getting out in the community, which is always a great thing...

Daily Friar 5.2.12

In recent history May has been a pretty decent month for the Padres. Most of the May months in the past few years have given the team a winning reacord. I'm not necessarily that will be the case this season, but they are on the right foot. They won last night in the first game of May, and hope to carry that over into tonight. Cory Luebke is missing his start tonight though, so...

Padres Perfect in May as They Snag Series From Brew Crew,

The Padres said see you later to April and hello to May as they shut the Brewers out in the final two of a three game series at Petco Park. It was the first series victory for the Friars of the 2012 campaign and hopefully a sign of things to come as they put the month of April behind them, where they recorded a 7-17 record. After an off day on Thursday, they will welcome back Heath...

Daily Friar 5.3.12

San Diego collectively mourned the loss of a sports icon for the city. What Tony Gwynn is to San Diego baseball, Junior Seau was to San Diego football. I am sad that he is gone from the world, but at the same time happy that he isn't battling his own demons anymore. It's sad that he had to go the way he did though. That being said, the Padres gave this city exactly what they...

Future Shock Blog: Minor League Update: Games of May 3 by Kevin Goldstein

Adys Portillo, RHP, Padres (Low-A Fort Wayne): 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. Portillo was one of the top international signings four years ago, but he's become all but forgotten, mostly because he's just never pitched well for an extended period of time. He's also still only 20 years old and has one of the best arms in the system. Sitting in the mid-90s with an explosive...

Former Brewer Suppan stings old squad

It had been 19 months since Jeff Suppan had last appeared in a major league game. But, the former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher, whose big contract and poor performance led to his eventual release from the team in June 2010, re-emerged from the minors as a member of the San Diego Padres to face his former team on Wednesday. And, in a game that would have ranked as one of Suppan'...

Luebke May Need Tommy John

A season already off to a tough start might get even tougher if what Bill Center is reporting comes to fruition. Luebke, who missed his last start due to elbow discomfort, has a damaged ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), damage to the elbow flexor and fluid in the joint. The injury might require Tommy John surgery to repair and would need at least a year to successfully rehab. Luebke...

Post-Petco, Relievers Not As Bad As You Think

Yesterday, the Padres traded reliever Ernesto Frieri to the Angels, in exchange for Minor Leaguers Alexi Amarista and Donn Roach. Frieri has pitched very well thus far this season, with walk and strikeout rates significantly better than he had in 2011, albeit in a much smaller sample. But will the Angels be getting that pitcher? Petco Park seemingly has a way of elevating mediocre...

Struggling Angels acquire bullpen help

The Angels bullpen has blown as many leads as any team in the American League so far this season. Perhaps in a well reasoned panic move, Los Angeles General Manager Jerry Dipoto chose to act quickly and acquire a dependable late inning reliever in Ernesto Frieri. The Columbian born Frieri was utterly dominant in parts of four seasons with the San Diego Padres, compiling a 2.33...
