Padres place LHP Luebke on DL with strained elbow

The San Diego Padres have placed left-hander Cory Luebke on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left elbow. Luebke, who is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA, said he began to feel soreness in his elbow during his last start, a 5-3 win Friday at San Francisco. To replace him as San Diego's starter on Wednesday night against Milwaukee, the Padres purchased the contract of right...

The anticipated crowd of more than 40,000 will be asked to wear it for 10 consecutive minutes at the start of the fifth inning. A...

Jered Weaver's no-hitter might be what saves the Angels' season

Call it cliche if you want.  You could even call it trite or hackneyed if you really wanted to be petty about it.  But, yes, Jered Weaver might very well have saved the Angels' season with his no-hitter last night. I'm was almost hesitant to write that myself because it seems like such an over-reaching statement, but the more I think about it, the more I just can't...

Weaver shares his gem with loved ones

Jered Weaver signed a contract extension with the Los Angeles Angels last season for just these kinds of moments. A Southern California native, Weaver threw his first career no-hitter Wednesday night in front of friends and family -- literally. His parents and his wife of just about six months were all in the stands, as they usually are for Weaver's home starts. They joined...

Weaver pitches no-hitter, Angels beat Twins 9-0

For The Associated Press The Los Angeles Angels' commitment to Jered Weaver is paying off. Signed to a five-year, $85 million contract extension last August, the 29-year-old left-hander pitched his first no-hitter Wednesday night, dominating lowly Minnesota in a 9-0 cakewalk. All the Twins could muster against the two-time All-Star was one walk - and one other baserunner when...

Dodgers sign OF Bobby Abreu

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed Bobby Abreu one week after the Angels cut the slumping outfielder. Abreu hit .208 in 24 at-bats before the last-place Angels let him go last Friday. He didn't have to go very far to find another job, opting for a reserve role with the NL West-leading Dodgers. The 38-year-old Abreu is in the last season of a $27 million, three-year contract...

Why You Need To buy Low On Pujols

It's no secret that the savy manager can make or break his team with the buy low/sell high trade mantra. An extreme example is the trade I've just executed in my 12 team mixed keeper league. I was offered Joey Votto, Roy Halladay and a 3rd round pick in next years draft for Josh Hamilton and my 2nd rounder. This is an extreme example, and I think the planets alligned for...

Weaver's hometown career culminates with no-hitter

Dave Weaver was in his usual seat, 20 rows behind home plate, drinking a beer and shouting instructions to his son in the quiet lulls between pitches. His wife, Gail, was alongside him, calmly enjoying a little night baseball. It really could have been any night in three lives filled with similar evenings at ballparks all across Southern California. Instead, Jered Weaver made an...

Daily Friar 5.3.12

San Diego collectively mourned the loss of a sports icon for the city. What Tony Gwynn is to San Diego baseball, Junior Seau was to San Diego football. I am sad that he is gone from the world, but at the same time happy that he isn't battling his own demons anymore. It's sad that he had to go the way he did though. That being said, the Padres gave this city exactly what they...
