PLAYERS: Jon Niese
TEAMS: New York Mets
The Mets got some great news Monday when the team announced that MRI results on Jon Niese showed that there was no structural damage in his shoulder besides some ordinary wear and tear. Once you start delving into the world of tears in rotator cuffs, no matter how small, you’re headed into some dangerous territory. Niese was cleared by doctors to begin a throwing program in Port St. Lucie, a good sign that means he’s not far from being back on the mound. As said, there’s no real structural damage, so his rehab will be based on his tolerance and how he feels more than anything else. I don’t think a mid-August projection is too far from feasible. That being said, it’s absolutely crucial that the Mets don’t rush Niese along just so he can come back two or three weeks sooner than somebody says he should. While there was only a minor strain and no tears, the last thing this team needs are for there to be any setbacks with a guy who will be one of the rotation’s staples for years to come....

Harvey’s Diminished Effectiveness After 100 Pitches Thrown

As I mentioned in my previous post, Matt Harvey threw a season-high 121 pitches last night for the second time this season. Here’s some interesting data from ESPN on Harvey’s diminished effectiveness when he surpasses 100 pitches. There’s a clear case to be made to be wary of using Harvey after 100 pitches anyway: According to ESPN alumnus Steve Glasser, tonight marked the...

The New York Mets have requested to put right-handed reliever Brandon Lyon on unconditional release waivers. The team recently made the announcement through their official Twitter page stating, The #Mets asked for unconditional release waivers for RHP Brandon Lyon. — New York Mets (@Mets) July 9, 2013 If Lyon accepts, he will become a free agent. Lyon was designated for assignment...

Harvey To Skip Next Start, Torres Will Pitch Saturday Against Pirates

Terry Collins announced to reporters in his pre-game press conference that Carlos Torres will start in place of Matt Harvey on Saturday against the Pirates. Going straight to my chief concern, Collins said it had partly to do with the team’s concern of innings pitched and that the team is now seeking to cut down Harvey’s workload for the second half as I have been clamoring...

Mets' Native American tribute fails?

The New York Mets are facing backlash from an American Indian organization after altering plans for an event later this month meant to celebrate Native American heritage. According to the New York Times , the Mets approached a New York-based non-profit called the American Indian Community House about helping to organize a Native American Heritage Day at Citi Field. The groups picked...

New York Mets right-hander Shaun Marcum will have season-ending surgery on his pitching shoulder next week. Marcum felt tingling and numbness in his right hand during a 7-6 loss at Milwaukee on Saturday night, when he allowed 11 hits and five runs in five innings. He had experienced similar symptoms in his previous start and during spring training, and had an MRI last week. Marcum...

Mets Well Represented In Top 5 In Jersey Sales

According to ESPN.com and Major League Baseball, the Mets have two of the five most popular jerseys purchased this season. Probably to nobody’s surprise, Matt Harvey finds himself #5 on this list, but quite frankly to my surprise, David Wright is ranked #4 on the list! Jersey sales are a funny thing. Often times when a player changes teams you’ll note a spike in jersey sales...

Mets' Matt Harvey has a blister, may skip next start

Matt Harvey has looked a bit more human of late.  While he has still been more than impressive this season, Harvey has allowed eight runs in his last two starts.  This could be a result of reduced control thanks to a blister on one of his pitching fingers.  And the New York Mets may give Harvey some rest to let the blister heal. According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Harvey...

The Mets Are Road Warriors

The New York Mets should call Expedia or Hotels.com and start talking about a promotions deal. There must be something about hotels, plane rides and late morning arrivals that the Mets seem to have fallen in love with. The season so far has been somewhat expected so far as the Mets are in fourth place with a 40-48 record. But something has happened to them when they play outside...

Mets Card of the Week: 1998 Rey Ordonez

1998 UPPER DECK REY ORDONEZ GROOVY KIND OF GLOVE Lest you think that Mike Piazza was the only Mets player featured in the pop-culture-happy insert sets of days gone by, here’s Rey Ordonez on a 1998 Upper Deck Retro Groovy Kind of Glove card. Because of course there was nothing more relevant to the kids of the late ’90s than a twice-over easy-listening hit (The Mindbenders in...

Mets News: Injury Updates On Marcum, Niese, Duda and Turner

While his team boarded a flight to San Francisco for the start of a three game series, pitcher Shaun Marcum boarded another plane bound for St. Louis to be examined for numbness and tingling in his cold right hand. He will be visiting with the same specialist who diagnosed Dillon Gee with a damaged artery in his pitching shoulder and a blood clot. Ultimately it led to season ending...

This Team Will Kill Us One Day

I always say that this team will kill us one day. (Well either them or those damn birds at AT&T Park.) After another game over 15 innings, this time on the west coast, that statement might be literal ... what with the sleep deprivation combined with the general angst extended by seven innings, who has the heart for this? Hell even I am doing something I very rarely do if at...
