On Tuesday the Minnesota Twins announced that Hall of Famer Paul Molitor will serve as a coach in 2014. It will be Molitor’s first Major League coaching job since he was hitting coach for the Seattle Mariners in 2004.
As reported by Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, Molitor will serve under manager Ron Gardenhire and will be in charge of base running, bunting and fielding instruction. In addition he will assist with in-game strategy from the dugout.
This will not be Molitor’s first tour of duty as a coach for the Twins. He was a coach under Tom Kelly in 2000 and 2001. In 2003, he was Twins’ Minor League infielder and base running coordinator in 2003 and again in 2005 through the 2013 season.
The move is a smart one by the organization. Molitor has worked with many of the players during Spring Training, and is very well liked and respected among those in the organization. After many years of speculation, the Twins finally added Molitor to the coaching staff.
