The Red Sox open a four-game series with the increasingly irrelevant Evil Empire tonight, sending Jake Peavy to the mound to face Ivan Nova. On Friday, Felix Doubront will take to the hill against fellow left-hander Andy "HGH" Pettitte. On Saturday afternoon, John Lackey will take on someone named David Huff and Sunday afternoon's match-up will feature Jon Lester against Hiroki Kuroda. The Carmine Hose have an excellent chance to dramatically accelerate the arrival of Yankee Elimination Day (a sorely needed new national holiday).

Felix Doubront Says His Mechanics Were ‘Off,’ Has ‘No Words’ to Describe Rough Outing (Video)

The Red Sox came away with another improbable win Friday night in the Bronx, but starter Felix Doubront put them in a hole early. Doubront lasted just 3 2/3 innings for the second consecutive start, allowing three runs on six hits and six walks. The left-hander was appreciative of his team’s late rally — Mike Napoli‘s grand slam tied erased a four-run deficit in the seventh...

Jon Lester’s late-season revitalization has some flaws

I hate Jon Lester, I always have hated Jon Lester. You can go back through the archives of this blog and find all my anti-Jon Lester rants and raves. Part of that comes from the fan-base that widely overuses the word “ace” when it comes to baseball and calling Jon Lester an “ace” for a couple of years now. Jon Lester isn’t an “ace” and never has been an “ace”. Kershaw...

Jon Lester Says He Couldn’t Worry About Max Scherzer, Focused on Giving Team Best Chance to Win (Video)

It was a battle of two aces on Tuesday night, but Jon Lester saved one of his best performances of the season for the occasion, and he was rewarded with a hard-earned win. The left-hander allowed only one run, and struck out a season-high nine batters over his seven innings of work. Lester outdueled Max Scherzer who was seeking his 20th win of the season, and looking to become...

Red Sox have new good luck charm

The Boston Red Sox posted this picture on Instagram today of a three-foot tall cigar shop Indian that has been traveling with the team recently.  Jonny Gomes talked about the statue in a recent diary post on ESPN. Jake Peavy picked up a good luck charm for us in San Francisco with a three-foot tall cigar store Indian. He went with us to Los Angeles and is home here with us. He brought...

Game 140: Tigers at Red Sox - Lester looks to prevent win No. 20 for Scherzer

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer Even without Miguel Cabrera, the Detroit Tigers showed why they are still considered the team to beat in the American League, shutting out the Boston Red Sox 3-0 in the series opener on Labor Day. Detroit (81-57) now trails Boston (82-57) by a half-game for the best record in the AL with a chance to overtake the top spot tonight. Jon Lester has...

Preview: Yankees vs Red Sox (8/5/13)

(Rich Schultz/Getty Images) A heated rivalry, postseason implications and, perhaps, some added drama stemming from the last time these clubs met, sure sounds like a September matchup between the Yankees and Red Sox. The Yanks and Sox begin a four game series on Thursday in the Bronx with Ivan Nova (8-4, 2.88 ERA) taking on Jake Peavy (3-1, 3.18 ERA.) Nova won the American League...

Clay Buchholz’s Return May Mean Trip to Bullpen for Felix Doubront or Ryan Dempster

The cavalry is coming, and it’s just in time for the stretch run. For the Red Sox, that simply means Clay Buchholz is on his way back. The right-hander continues his rehab assignments, and it’s believed he could return as early as next week in Tampa Bay. There’s no understating how important Buchholz could be, especially if he returns to anything close to what he was before...

Lester outduels Scherzer in Tigers' loss to Red Sox

BOSTON (AP) -- Jon Lester outdueled Max Scherzer and the Boston Red Sox beat Detroit 2-1 on Tuesday night, ending the Tigers right-hander's chance to become just the second pitcher to open a season with a 20-1 record. Lester (13-8) lowered his ERA to 1.71 in his past six starts. He allowed one earned run and eight hits with a season-high nine strikeouts and no walks. Scherzer...

Red Sox Fight Until Very End Against Yankees, Keep Finding New Ways to Win Games

Turning off the TV shouldn’t be an option. The Red Sox once again fought until the very end Thursday, and the result was a long, eventful, ugly and dramatic 9-8, 10-inning victory over the Yankees that further solidified Boston’s status as a must-watch team. The Red Sox looked to be well on their way to another victory Thursday, as Jake Peavy took the mound in the seventh inning...

Recap: Sox overcome bullpen fiasco for win in extras over Yankees

The Red Sox came out on top in a wild 10-inning game in the Bronx tonight, 9-8. What looked to be a fairly routine win for the Sox turned dramatic in the 7th. Down 7-2, the Yankees batted around in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs and taking the lead. The inning was a disaster all around. John Farrell left Jake Peavy in to start the inning (questionable), Peavy put two...

Scherzer takes second loss of season

Jon Lester outdueled Max Scherzer and the Boston Red Sox beat Detroit 2-1 on Tuesday night, ending the Tigers right-hander's chance to become just the second pitcher to open a season with a 20-1 record.

Not In the Face, Ivan! Not In the Face!

With the start of a four game set in Happytown, the Sox have a chance to put a sizable hurtin’ on the Yankees. Every win will beef up the already imposing 8 game lead the Sox currently enjoy. Dare I suggest that a sweep would pretty much eliminate any Yankee post-season aspirations. On the heels of that insane pasting of the Tigers last night, I’ve got to hope the boys have fine...

Red Sox-Yankees Live: Felix Doubront, Andy Pettitte Gear Up for Southpaw Battle in Bronx

5:12 p.m.: Jacoby Ellsbury will be out of the Red Sox’ lineup for the second time in four games. Ellsbury has been dealing with a hand issue that arose last weekend against the White Sox. However, according to The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham, it’s a foot injury that will keep Ellsbury out of Friday’s lineup. Shane Victorino will shift over to center field and slide into...

Preview: Yankees vs Red Sox (9/7/13)

David Huff (2-0, 1.13 ERA) gets his first start since he took over for Hughes and takes on John Lackey(8-12, 3.22 ERA.) Huff has been nearly unhittable since being called up on August 15th, giving up just one run on six hits over 15 innings of relief. “For me, it’s just another start,” said Huff. “I’m not going to try and play it up to make it anything different. Because...
