Realistically Martinez could return anytime from the middle to the end of August. The concern is that Martinez is thirty-five years old and is coming off rotator cuff surgery. While he will be able to contribute, to assume the Pedro on the mound will be the same Cy Young Award winning pitcher might be asking too much. His return isn't as if the Mets are acquiring an ace pitcher at the trading deadline.
Omar Minaya has stated that the Mets will most likely be quiet at the trading deadline, but maybe Omar needs to revisit this thinking. The Mets by no means have this division won. Phillies Assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. was spotted in Toronto over the weekend scouting pitcher Josh Towers and rumors are circulating the Braves are talking to the Rangers about Mark Teixeira. With both of these teams looking to upgrade, it might be in Mets fans best interest for Minaya to look again at what's out there and make the necessary transactions to upgrade the pitching staff.
