Diamondbacks Central:
The Diamondbacks signed former veteran outfielder Wily Mo Pena to a minor league deal on Wednesday. That deal includes an invitation to Spring Training and if he makes the club, Pena would receive $675,000 for the season.
The 28-year-old hasn’t gotten a major league at-bat since his stint with the Nationals back in 2008. During that year, Pena hit .205 with two home runs and 10 RBI in only 206 at-bats. The outfielder had his best season backs in 2004 with the Reds when he hit .259 with 26 dingers and 66 RBI. He also had a stint with the Red Sox in 2006 and part of the 2007 season. Pena spent last season playing in independent ball and played in 40 games with the Padres Triple-A affiliate.
Pena will compete with Brandon Allen, Gerardo Parra and Cole Gillespie for time in left field. With the little production that the D’Backs got out of left field last season, the deal makes a lot of sense. Pena always had a lot of pop in his bat and that was something that was mis...
