Hunter Pence didn't take batting practice Monday. He didn't shag fly balls and he

didn't run. He could barely put his uniform on.

Pence injured his left shoulder diving for a ball in San Diego on Sunday. He was

scheduled to have an MRI on Tuesday morning.

But then he woke up Tuesday and, suddenly, felt fine. The MRI results showed a bruised

rotator cuff, but not structural damage.

So Pence showed up to the ballpark, got the go-ahead to play and then sparked the

Phillies offense with a two-run home run that opened the scoring in an 8-5 win over the

Diamondbacks.

"If I'm good to play, I'm going to be out there playing because I know in this game you

deal with a lot," Pence said. "When I first came in, I was like, I can move it pretty

good, let me see how it feels swinging. I really feel in my gut I'm OK to hit today. And I

was."

Just seeing Pence's name in the lineup sent a jolt through a Phillies clubhouse that

expected him to join Chase Utley and Ryan Howard on the sidelines Tuesday.

"That really helps -- he's such an aggressive hitter and a threat at the plate," said

Laynce Nix, who hit a two-run home run of his own three batters after Pence. "We needed

that tonight."

Manager Charlie Manuel knew Pence was OK when he peeked in on the All-Star's work in

the cage early Tuesday afternoon. He also enjoyed Pence's home run-hitting display during

regular, pregame batting practice.

But none of the pregame moonshots were as impressive to the manager as the two-run home

run Pence hit off Josh Collmenter in the fourth inning of a 0-0 game.

"What that meant to me is he had good BP and he had some outstanding distance in BP;

but that didn't put no runs on there for us," Manuel said. "I like that one in the game

that just made it over the fence better. It's not how far, it's how many."
