Peter Gammons, Red Sox Apologist

According to the Mitchell Report (you know, the one written by Red Sox executive George Mitchell,) there were remarkably few Red Sox players to take steroids. The ones that did were generally marginal players, like Brendan Donnelly. Peter Gammons has been angrily vocal about steroids in baseball, and while it's no secret he's a Boston-based writer, he has always maintained an "above the fray" air. He's in the Baseball Hall of Fame for his supposed objectivity and talent with prose. There's no denying the latter, but the former, well...you'll forgive me if I find him to be a pompous, more articulate version of Bill Simmons. Here's an eloquent, Hall of Fame-worthy soft-sell rationalization for "ex-Red Sox reliever" Brendan Donnelly's inclusion in the Mitchell Report.
