From Mark Feinsand:

After Mike Mussina retired following his first 20-win season, Pettitte considered going out on top after helping the Yankees capture their 27th World Series title.

There was only one problem: he wasn’t ready to hang up his spikes.

“There’s no doubt it did. I couldn’t have wrote a script any better than the way last year ended,” Pettitte said. “I was like, ‘What else is there to do? Why would you even continue to play?’ Then you start talking to guys, and I want to make sure I’m done, that I fully exhaust myself. I don’t want to regret not playing. I want to come back and help this organization win another one.”
He's too much of a competitor to just give up after having a solid year like he did and ending it with another ring.

As for the issue of his family, all of them wanted him to stay for another year.
The vote was unanimous among his family members this season, and Pettitte said the fact that they bought a house in New York after he returned in 2007 had made life much easier for Laura.

“We’ve totally fallen back in love with being up there,” Pettitte said. “Being away for three years, we realized how much we missed it.”
