By remaining patient over the past few seasons, the Philadelphia Phillies have cashed in heavily on Domonic Brown who was named the National League Player of the Month for the month of May.Brown emerged onto the national scene by putting on an offensive clinic in May, batting .303 (33-for-109) with 12 home runs and 25 RBI along with a .688 slugging percentage. In the last seven games of May, Brown slugged at least one home run in five of those games (two of such being multi-home run games).Brown is the first Philadelphia hitter to belt at least 12 homers in a single month since Ryan Howard in 2006. He is also the first member of the Phillies to win the award since Ryan Howard in August 2009.Another interesting note about Brown’s torrid month of May is that he did not draw a single walk in the entire month, the first player to hit as many home runs as he did (12) and not draw a walk in a single month in major league history.Bill Barnwell of Grantland had this to say about Brown’s rare feat:“In May, Brown struck out 21 times. He did not walk once. Think about that. The guy who was tied for the league lead in homers during the month didn’t take a single free trip to first. Brown was being “protected” by the likes of Erik Kratz and John Mayberry Jr. during May, and nary a single pitcher was able to pitch four balls past him. That’s not a change in approach. It’s a statement of intent.”A “statement of intent” indeed.
