Joe Blanton became the third member of the Philadelphia Phillies to switch coasts.  But is there a place for Juan Pierre in Philly?

Dollars And Sense:

Everybody knows that baseball is a business, but many fans fail to grasp the full scope of that. The idea is to make a profit and produce a more appealing ledger. The Phillies have revenues in the millions minus expenses, like payroll, which is why they deducted another $3M from their cost by moving Kentucky Joe. The 3 traded players were owed $9.47M in 2012 dollars, and not the AAV (Average Annual Value) figured for the competitive-balance tax. When the postseason becomes out of reach, the GM adds proceeds by subtracting expenditures:  Shane Victorino, Hunter Pence and Blanton.

Rube Amaro’s next step is to offer opportunities for young talent in the field and on the mound. This will provide 56 games to evaluate them and coach them for future returns. After the campaign, he will search for his biggest needs, which would be third base and 2 backend relievers. He will assemble the 2013 version by April. Then, he will assess his shortcomings at the half. He won’t spend all of his budget during the off-season; he’ll set aside $5M for July 31.

Cholley Catches The Photographer During His 7th-Inning Talent Evaluation For 2013

Magic Juan, however, falls into a separate category. He has value but he isn’t a drag on the bottom line. He signed for $800K, which is less than double the minimum of $480K. He is owed $266K, which means he may be worth more here. Plus, at $1M he would be a fit to replace any injured outfielders–like Dom Brown–provide offense with a .300 average, and speed off the bench. That stated, how often does he play with LH Nate Schierholtz, LH Brown and RH John Mayberry Jr. in center? Schierholtz and Brown will occasionally patrol center, which would allow Pierre to start against right-handers when the dust settles.

Amaro will need 2 outfielders next year:  Nate and Dom have the first shot to win those jobs.  The others are:  Mayberry, Pierre, Laynce Nix and Michael Martinez.  Schierholtz is hitting second for observational at-bats, because he is the one they know the least about.  If none of them wow the brain trust, Pierre would be the leftfielder, and he is a veteran presence for the youngsters.  Is he a find, like R.A. Dickey was for the Mets?  That said, if two succeed, Rube will put 100% of his bank at third and in the ‘pen.  You want to know what the GM will do?  Watch Schierholtz, Brown and Mayberry.

Howard Turns Boos to Cheers in Walk-Off Win

Since returning after spending half the season on the DL, Ryan Howard has not had much luck getting his bat going. He struck out 3 times in today’s Phillies - Diamondbacks game and each time, the boos got louder. But in the 9th, Howard would redeem himself with a walk-off single to hand the Phillies a 5-4 victory and the series win. Prior to that, Howard was not the only one hearing...

Tyler Cloyd? Not Yet as Phillies Name Kyle Kendrick Wednesday's Starter

Phillies prospect Tyler Cloyd went 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA at AA Reading this season.  So, the Phillies promoted him to AAA Lehigh Valley.  At AAA he is 11-1 with a 1.93 ERA.  So, in all that makes him 14-1 with a 1.93 ERA. I thought it was a foregone conclusion that when Joe Blanton was traded to the Dodgers on Friday that Cloyd would get a chance.  He will not. When Kyle Kendrick...

Phillies release Mike Fontenot

The Philadelphia Phillies announced that they have released veteran infielder Mike Fontenot. He was designated for assignment earlier this week. Fontenot, 32, hit .289/.343/.340 with 1 HR, 5 RBI's and a 85 OPS+ in 105 plate appearances with the Phillies in 2012. Image by SD Dirk under the Creative Commons License Agreement.

Cahill, D-backs look to rebound vs. Phillies

While his long-term future in Philadelphia might seem uncertain, Cliff Lee is likely to remain in a Phillies uniform for the remainder of this season. Looking to build on one of his best starts of 2012, Lee tries to help the Phillies to a second consecutive victory and home series win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. In the midst of his own frustrating season, rumors swirled...

Question of the Day- Friday

Here's what we know:1) Michael Martinez is one of the worst hitting position players in MLB history and isn't really an outfielder.2) The Phillies want to see what Mayberry, Brown, and Schierholtz have to offer heading into 2013.3) Juan Pierre is batting .312 with 27 SB.Why did Charlie Manuel start Mini-Mart in CF?  Furthermore, why the hell is Martinez even on this team?

No Lee, but Blanton gives LA a steady starter

LOS ANGELES -- Just when it looked like the Dodgers' Ned Colletti and the Phillies' Ruben Amaro were on the fast track to becoming BBF's (Baseball Best Friends), Amaro must have had second thoughts. Tuesday night the Dodgers received Shane Victorino from the Phils for pitchers Josh Lindblom and Ethan Martin and early Friday afternoon Colletti and Amaro agreed on their...

Phillies GM: Lee won't be traded

A day after the Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly claimed Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee on waivers, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said that Lee will not be traded, ESPN.com reported Saturday. Amaro would not comment on whether Lee was claimed after being placed on waivers earlier this week but he said it was irrelevant because the team does not plan on trading...

Joe Blanton Claimed and Traded

Joe Blanton was claimed of of waivers today by the LA Dodgers. The Phillies made a trade with the Dodgers to et a player to be named later and cash. More to come....

Dodgers acquire Joe Blanton from the Phillies

Not exactly the Phillies' pitcher I wanted the Dodgers to acquire, but the they finally grabbed a starting pitcher in Joe Blanton. The Phillies will receive cash and/or a player to be named later. The Dodgers are also responsible for the $2.9 million left on Blanton's contract. As long as the possible player going to Philadelphia is of no significance, this deal is...

Ruiz Out 4-6 Weeks With Foot Tear

Ruiz will miss 4-6 weeks. (AP) Chalk this up as yet another major blow for the Phillies in this season from hell. Carlos Ruiz will miss 4-6 weeks with a plantar fascitis and a partial tear in his his left foot. Hector Luna has been recalled from Lehigh Valley. Chooch will be reevaluated in two weeks. The injuries just keep adding up for this team that has gone through a almost...

Blanton trade continues Phillies' sell-a-thon

Three days after the Philadelphia Phillies waved the white flag on the 2012 season, they climbed to the upper deck at Citizens Bank Park and sounded the trumpets to make that declaration all but official. Before their series-opening game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which resulted in a 4-2 loss, the Phillies sent right-hander Joe Blanton to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who had...

Phillies Execute first waiver trade with the Dodgers

I have a beef. This time of year you always hear or read about a player being exposed to waivers. Suddenly, it becomes a big story because people misunderstand the waivers process. Following the non-waiver trade deadline, the waivers process changes some. Most people think of waivers as irrevocable waivers. You put a player on waivers, someone claims them, and then that...

Phils Walk It Off In Series Finale Against Diamondbacks

PHOTO: AP After falling behind 3-0 early, the Phils tied the game in the fifth on a Chase Utley home run, but gave up the lead the very next inning on a home run by Paul Goldschmidt. Then, in the 8th, they tied the game again on an error, and got the walk-off win in the ninth on a single by Ryan Howard. The win puts the Phillies OUT of the basement in the NL East, as the Marlins...

Phillies run finally over?

When the Phillies shipped Shane Victorino to the Los AngelesDodgers a slew of great memories raced through my head. Mainly, the magical2008 World Series run. These past five seasons have been the best baseball infranchise’s history, although some may argue that the early 1980’s was better. I went back and looked at how that 2008 team was built, and Iwas astonished at the savvy...
