Rarely, in the history of the Philadelphia Phillies, does a youngster, like Domonic Brown,  produce jaw-dropping stats during March, and carry them into the regular season. That stated, many are cautioning against unrealistic expectations for him, but there is a way to foresee success. TAL’S HANDY CAPS WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: By design my articles represent a baseball man’s thinking, the view from the dugout and the GM’s box. Most fans do not consider the budget, prospects on the radar, the organization’s weaknesses, the track record, the competition and the other intangibles. Please go to my author archives or Phillies page for my most recent coverage. Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you. Check out:  Philadelphia Phillies story-poll: On the radar The new summer schedule will allow me to publish the best 3 storylines each week, but there will be an updated calendar included with each feature:  These posts involve commentary, polls and stats for the upcoming 7 days. Post time is 6 to 9 pm for the days listed below. April 6 to April 12 Any schedule changes and holdups that may occur will be posted at Tal’s Handy Caps on Facebook. Spring standouts generally find April to be the cruelest month; however, some inexperienced hopefuls eventually earn their keep on the parent club. Most players just don’t burst onto the scene and keep piling up the numbers. The road from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to the Bank as a starter is long and winding. That said, there are certain touchstones that reveal that event before it happens. Revere almost Beats the Throw for a Bunt Single during the 4th at the Bank on April 5 against the Royals. Brown brought his many doubters with him to Clearwater in February, and they opined about the things he could not do. He could not hit the fastball, he did not have a quick bat–like Darin Ruf–and he did not belong in the majors or even at Lehigh Valley last year. As he produced solid statistics early on, these critics–who played the game at the highest level–waited for the mediocrity to return. However, some teammates voiced a different perspective about him. Anticipating a positive end result, Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard noted that Brown possessed the answers to making the team. These 2 are core members with a ring, and they are at a crossroads in their individual careers as well. Ergo, Howard is finally taking the advice about standing closer to the plate, where he will be more successful. And Rollins is also setting a good example for Brown by realizing that Ben Revere in the leadoff spot is an RBI opportunity on a consistent basis. Chase Utley Pilfers 3rd during the 3rd at the Bank on April 5 against the Royals. With his locker next to Michael Young’s, Brown made good use of the veteran’s hitting expertise. The left fielder averaged .356 with 7 free passes, 7 bombs and 17 RBI during spring training, which was more than a pleasant surprise. Charlie Manuel even thought out loud that he might slot higher than 6th in the order. At that time the common wisdom regarding Brown was that he was not the same man offensively last season. Erik Kratz Disturbs the Chalk as He Scores during the 2nd on April 4 in Atlanta. Brown has a .333 average, and had a knock in every battle against a main divisional rival on the road before his home-opening blast. Wednesday night, he used a better defensive technique on an attempted snag of a paint-scrapping homerun than John Mayberry Jr. With Delmon Young and Carlos Ruiz on the horizon, Brown could be an integral part of a winning start for the red pinstripes. He did not just squeak onto the 25-man roster; he landed an everyday job, plugging one of 5 holes for Rube Amaro. Brown is talking with his stick, which is right under the noses of his naysayers.   Phillies e-mail notification: Email Notifications   LINK-UP BELOW: A link for Phillies e-mail notification is provided above and below.
