Found April 22, 2013 on Raise the Jolly Roger!:
The Pirates’ momentum (and/or luck) ran out on Monday night, as the Phillies surprisingly outpitched them and were able to pull off a narrow one-run victory. The Bucs fall to 10-9 and now face an uphill climb for the rest of this four game set on the other side of the state. Over the weekend against the Braves, the Pirates won a couple of games in which the pitching matchup didn’t look good. On Monday, the opposite happened: the Bucs had A.J. Burnett going against a somewhat unheralded prospect making his MLB debut…and the Phillies came out with the victory. Burnett seemed off for most of the evening. He still struck out his fair share (seven) but had to work very hard for each one. AJ seemed to have some extra movement on his fastball and while that can often be a good thing, he didn’t seem to be able to control it too well on this night. He walked three, hit a batter, and constantly found himself in deep counts struggling to put hitters away. Eventually he was able to get some big...

Brandon Inge Activated and Starting at Third Tonight

Brandon Inge has been activated from the DL and is starting at third tonight. The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated third baseman Brandon Inge, and have him in tonight’s lineup at third base. Inge was recently on a rehab assignment in Indianapolis, batting for a .150/.320/.283 line in 60 at-bats. The Pirates are going up against left-hander Cole Hamels tonight. Inge has done well...

Prospect Watch: Morton Throws Four Shutout Innings, Bad Night For Offense

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the pre-season rankings, and links to each prospect writeup can be...

First Pitch: Time to Start Looking at the Bullpen Depth

Jose Contreras could be a 7th inning option for the Pirates soon. If there’s one thing the Pirates have been good at, it has been finding relievers. Jason Grilli, Mark Melancon, and even guys like Jeanmar Gomez and Vin Mazzaro have come cheap for their production. Those bullpen scouting skills look like they will be put to the test this year. Tom Bragg wrote today about how the...

A Lot Being Asked of Pirates’ Bullpen

Consistency has been a problem for the Pirates this season. The offense needed more than a week to find its stride and the starting pitching (outside of A.J. Burnett and Wandy Rodriguez) has been hit and miss. One aspect of Pittsburgh’s club that actually has been consistent has been the strong work put in by the bullpen. Justin Wilson is on pace to throw 108 innings this season...

Top Performers: Andy Oliver Has Been One of the Best Pitchers So Far

Below are the pitching Game Scores* in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from the last week. The top ten and the bottom five starts are broken down below the chart. The rankings include every pitcher who made a start for a Pirates’ minor league affiliate, with no limitations on whether the starting pitcher has prospect eligibility. *Game Score is a stat created by Bill James...

Prospect Notebook: Recapping Week Two in Altoona

The Curve played seven games in the past seven days, going 4-3, to move to 8-10 on the season.  As with last week’s prospect notebook, this review highlights the Curve players who have grabbed my attention this past week for one reason or another. And as with last week’s recap, the same small sample size disclaimer is necessary.  It’s a long season, and I am only offering...

How bad is the decline of Ryan Howard, really?

Ryan Howard is an easy target of criticism by Phillies fans. For those who pay attention to the deeper numbers and statistics of the game, Ryan Howard has his flaws. This cannot be denied when taking his contract value in to consideration. But as the month of April starts to wind down I was curious how Howard's first month of the season has compared to some of his previous Aprils...

Game 18 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (13-4) at Pirates (9-8) 1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates go for a series win an 3 of 4 against the Braves this afternoon, which would be quite an accomplishment. Even if they lose and split the series, I’ll happily take that result considering the facts that the Braves were playing incredible ball coming in to Pittsburgh and that the Bucs...

Commemorating Russell Martin's Last Days As A Dodger (On Cardboard)

Though Russell Martin is on his second post-Dodgers stop, I still love collecting his cardboard. So when I had the chance to snag a printing plate of Martin that was awesome on a number of levels, I jumped at the opportunity. For a bit over half a blaster, this amazing 1/1 is now mine:The plate - the Yellow 1/1 of Russ' 2011 Topps Series 1 card - marks the 10th Martin Plate to...

What do the stats tell us about Ben Revere?

Did the Phillies get what they thought with Ben Revere? The stats certainly say no.

Giving Kendrick His Due

One of the toughest aspects of both being a fan and providing accurate analysis is separating perception from reality. Fans tend to anchor their opinions of a player early on, holding steadfastly to that perception even after the player improves or declines. This holds especially true for fans of a specific team, who watch the same players routinely and have difficulty acknowledging...

Biddle K's 16

Phillies prospect Jesse Biddle struck out 16 last night in a start against Harrisburg. But more importantly, he got two hits. Can this guy play first base?

Phillies tab Pettibone as replacement for Lannan

When John Lannan went down with a knee injury last week, there was a lot of speculation of who was going to take his next scheduled start.  While many fans including myself would have liked to see Adam Morgan take Lannan’s start it just wasn’t possible giving the way the Ironpigs rotation goes.  Another potential roadblock for Morgan is that he is not on the 40 man roster...
