In a saavy move (did Gillick lock Ruben in the closet and make the call?), the Phillies acquired Ty Wigginton, and his giant head, from the Rockies for a player-to-be-named or cash.

Wigginton will give the Phillies 70% of what Michael Cuddyer might have, but at a fraction of the cost ($4 million, with a $4 million option for next year) and risk.

Though he’s not a great defensive player, Wigginton can play 1B, 2B, 3B and the corner OF spots.

He hasn’t been a great hitter the last couple years overall, but is a good option against lefties. He had a .788 OPS against them last year, and .771 the year prior.

He also will provide some pop off the bench, with 37 HRs in the last two years.

I would have to think that this move takes Cuddyer off the table, which is probably a good thing based on his asking price relative to his value.

The interesting part of this to me is that if the Phillies are going with the younger guys in the remaining bullpen spots, as they should, the only spot remaining to fill is short-stop, and as I posted the other day, they have enough money to make a run at Jose Reyes if they want to. With a Cuddyer signing unlikely, it is certainly something to think about.
