Laynce Nix hit .250/.299/.451 for the Nationals last season.

The Phillies have signed free agent Laynce Nix to a two-year contract, as first reported by Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com.

Nix is a 6-foot-1, 220-pound lefthanded corner outfielder and first baseman who has played nine major league seasons for four different teams. Last year, Nix hit .250 with a .299 on-base percentage, .451 slugging percentage and 16 home runs in 351 plate appearances for the Nationals.

Nix has had two “okay” seasons as a major leaguer. He is nothing special. The Phillies wanted a lefthanded hitting corner outfielder, I’m just not sure why they chose this lefthanded hitting corner outfielder with more productive players like Jason Kubel and Johnny Damon available. (And I’m still confused by the Phils’ ongoing lack of interest in Josh Willingham.)

Nix posted a .475 slugging percentage against righties last season, hitting all 16 of his homers against opposite-handed pitching. He was just 3-for-27 against lefties in 2011 and has a career .181 clip against them for his career.

Fans have been irrationally attached this offseason to the concept of “getting younger.” To those that see age as a non-contextual factor, sure, Nix is a better option than the 38-year-old Damon. But why sign a slow corner outfielder with no plate discipline over a fast corner outfielder with significantly more plate discipline? Both would have been inexpensive. And it’s not like these are long-term deals we’re talking about… age doesn’t matter on a one-year deal, which Damon could have been signed to.

Oh well. This wasn’t a bad move. But the Phils probably could have done better.
