The Phillies felt pretty confident with Kyle Kendrick on the mound last night. His 2.34 ERA since the All Star Break was the second best in all of baseball. Their opponent was the worst team in baseball. In the end, things didn’t work out quite as they had hoped.

Kyle Kendrick was not sharp in his 5 innings of work, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits as he dropped to 9-11 on the season. But this was not on Kyle Kendrick. The Phillies offense was particularly awful and mustered no support for their second half ace en route to getting shut out by the lowly Astros, despite having plenty of opportunities.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals, two teams who are ahead of the Phillies in the Wild Card race are engaged in a 4 game set. After losing the 1st game, the Dodgers have bounced back to win the next 2. In doing so, the Dodgers tied St. Louis for that final wild card spot. The Phillies, had they bested the Astros could have moved to 2 games back. Instead they remain 3 games back and now trail the Pirates and Brewers as well as the Dodgers and Cards.

The Phillies have 1 game left in Houston before moving on to play the New York Mets, another team going nowhere. The problem is that the Phillies have struggled against the Mets this year and obviously after losing 2 of the first 3 to the Astros, game 4 is no lock either.

Roy Halladay (10-7, 4.01 ERA) will take the mound for the Phillies today, hoping to rebound from a shaky outing last week to get the Phillies back on the winning side of the scoreboard. The Phillies have dropped back to .500 at 73-73. There are 16 games to go in the season.
