Phillies-roy-halladay

While the Phillies continue to pile up heartbreaking losses, the news on the injury front is getting better on the big three injured superstars.

Roy Halladay finally received his second opinion yesterday from Mets doctor Steve Alchek. After much delay (almost a week) Dr. Michael Ciccotti’s original diagnosis of grade 1 strain of the latissimus dorsi muscle was confirmed. Even better news was the fact that Ruben Amaro Jr. told the press that Roy Halladay was free of any symptoms yesterday. The original timeframe is still at play here, which would keep Halladay out for a total of 6-8 weeks. Nonetheless, it’s good news that there isn’t anything more serious going on with Doc.

In more good news, Ryan Howard will join Chase Utley in an extended spring training game today. Howard will DH, but will not run or field. While Howard has been doing some jogging and light sprinting, his calf is still not quite strong enough to do full sprinting. Howard will at least get to see some live pitching and get the feel of being back in game action.

Chase Utley went 3-4 the other night with a double and home run. Utley will also DH in an extended spring training game. He will not field, but will hit and run the bases.

Jim Thome should be ready tomorrow to re-join the Phillies. Thome will be back just in time for 3 interleague series in which he could DH for the team. Thome has been out for quite a while with a bad back.

What's next for Phils, Halladay?

Roy Halladay is so earnest. He was that way in Toronto. He is that way in Philadelphia. I suspect he was that way in the third grade. He reached the big leagues in 1998, struggled for a spell, remade himself in the minors and returned to stay in 2001. He has since become one of his generation's most respected and decorated pitchers: the perfect game, the first postseason no...

Injury to cost pitcher Roy Halladay his 2014 vesting option?

Other than three grounds-crew members, Roy Halladay was the lone soul on the field early Sunday morning at Citizens Bank Park. He ran sprints on the warning track, which probably offered little solace for the weeks of rest ahead. If Halladay’s bad shoulder forces an absence of eight weeks, as suggested, it could make him a free agent one season sooner than expected. Halladay signed...

Phillies active Thome from DL

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated Jim Thome from the disabled list and sent infielder Pete Orr to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Thome, a member of the 600-homer club, had been sidelined with a lower back strain since April 29. He's just 2 for 18 in limited appearances, mainly as a pinch hitter. Thome could get plenty of at-bats as a designated hitter in nine interleague games...

Phillies’ sellout streak at 232, and counting

The home sellout streak the Phillies have fashioned will come upon 3 years. To get there, they only need 11 more sold-out games. They have to get to 243 games. They are currently at 232. It appears likely that the Phillies will exceed that number this month, with 13 more home games remaining in June. But in a season in which the Phillies have struggled in the standings and with a...

On weekend misery, Halladay's costly injury and the Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies continued to struggle against National LEague East opponents this weekend, dropping two of three to the Miami Marlins. After clinging to a lead and needing a five-out save from Jonathan Papelbon Friday night for a 6-4 win, Cole Hamels failed to hold a lead on Saturday and the bats had nothing to offer against Carlos Zambrano on Sunday. Things certainly will...

Jim Thome Activated from DL, Phillies Option Pete Orr to Triple-A Lehigh

Jim Thome has been activated from the DL after spending over a month on it with a lower back strain. To make move for Thome on the roster, the Phillies have sent down infielder Pete Orr to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Before being placed on the DL, Thome was hitting .111 (2-18) in 12 games. However, Pete Orr was hitting .286 (12-42) with four doubles, a triple and five RBI's in 23...

Is Utley’s Return A Good Thing for the Phillies?

Photo Courtesy of Renne Cendrowski After a month of wondering what was going on with Phillies’ second baseman Chase Utley, word finally came on Sunday that he will head to Clearwater today to begin taking the next steps in his rehab for his knees. This is obviously good news for most Phillies fans as Utley is a beloved member of the team and a core player on this team that has...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Trade winds

Ryan Howard will begin extended spring training for the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater. He and Chase Utley will be in the lineup, but he won’t be running out his at-bats. Missouri State's Johnson ready for big leagues

ST. LOUIS There's something about inspiration, the way it provides hope and direction and gives purpose to wild fantasies. There's something about a chase toward a goal that makes the dreamer believe anything is possible with focus and a little effort. It's something Missouri State junior pitcher Pierce Johnson learned at an early age. Baseball is in his blood. The...
