The Philadelphia Phillies entered play Saturday at 67-71 (Saturday’s game was rained out). They are only 4 games under .500, and 7 games out of the final Wild Card spot with 24 games to go. The Phillies and Rockies will now play a double header. First game will be at 1:05, the second at 6:35.

The Phillies activated catcher Carlos Ruiz from the disabled list on Friday. Ruiz had been dealing with plantar fasciitis. Though activated, Ruiz did not play in Friday’s game.

Third baseman Placido Polanco may have played his last game in Philadelphia. Polanco’s oft-injured back has flared up again and put him out of action. The Phillies hold an option on Polanco’s contract but it has been pretty clear that they will not exercise that option, leaving Polanco a free agent at season’s end.

Polanco’s platoon partner, Kevin Frandsen, who has done an outstanding job playing 3rd base for the Phillies has a stress fracture in his left fibula. Assistant General Manager Scott Proferock said that Frandsen shouldn’t miss much time, but Manager Charlie Manuel seemed more concerned. Frandsen, has hit .336 in 34 games with the Phillies this year and has been surprisingly good for the team.

Reliever Raul Valdes will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus, which will likely end his season. The 34 year old was one of the very few bright spots in a very disappointing bullpen.

In a lengthy interview with CSNPhilly’s Jim Salisbury, Ruben Amaro said that Manager Charlie Manuel will be back next year, even though it could cost the team their manager in waiting, Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg was the manager of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs this year, but was interviewed last year for Major League Managing jobs. It’s only a matter of time before he latches on somewhere.

I recommend reading both installments of Salisbury’s interview with RAJ. Read Part 1of it here. Part 2 is here.
