A nightmare season for the Philadelphia Phillies continues, as the team has placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day DL with plantar fasciitis in his left foot that will knock him out for four to six weeks. Ruiz missed the Phillies' games on Wednesday and Friday with the injury, and was placed on the DL today after an MRI revealed a partial tear in his foot. While Ruiz is out, the Phillies catcher will be veteran Brian Schneider and career minor leaguer Erik Kratz, who has raked in limited playing time in the majors this year.

The caravan of disappointment continues on for the Phillies. With Ruiz now on the DL, and the outfield duo of Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence traded this week, the Phillies offense is absolutely sparse. Jimmy Rollins is their active leader with 12 homers, and their leader in OPS is uh...Juan Pierre, at .727. Chase Utley has hit well since his return, with an .858 OPS, but has played in just 28 games.

This Phillies team right now is really...not good. Last night's lineup against the Diamondbacks featured just two Opening Day starters (Rollins and John Mayberry Jr), and while Utley and Ryan Howard *are* back in the lineup, the Phillies are still trotting out guys like Kevin Frandsen, top prospect turned falling star Domonic Brown, Schneider, and the underwhelming Nate Schierholtz, acquired from the Giants in the Pence trade.

It's been a very rough year for the Phillies, and the loss of their All-Star catcher just beats that point home a little more.
