Phillies Sign RHP Rodrigo Lopez to Minor-League Deal

Holy crap the Phillies have made a move. According to Fernando Ballesteros at the Mexican baseball magazine Puro Beisbol, the Phillies have signed 37-year-old Rodrigo Lopez to a minor league deal. Lopez, who is signing on for his second stint with the Phillies, last played for the team in 2009....

Adams’ Option Can Void Based on Health

Mike Adams’ third-year option with the Phillies can be voided if he suffers an elbow or shoulder injury in 2014 that prevents him from starting the 2015 season, according to the Inquirer. Adams is set to earn $12 million over two seasons from the Phillies. If he makes 65 appearances in 2014 — as he’s done just twice in eight seasons — his $6 million option for 2015 vests...

Epstein: No more lovable losers for Cubs

Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein says he understands the ballclub's culture better now than he did when he first arrived. Epstein spoke about the Cubs' reputation as ''lovable losers.'' While that allowed the team to draw almost 2.9 million fans despite losing 101 games, Epstein won't consider it a success until the team wins...

What if every Phillies player matched their best seasons in 2013?

Imagine for a second a world in which Carlos Ruiz hits .325, Ryan Howard hits 58 bombs, Chase Utley knocks in 100 runs, Rollins recreates his MVP season, Michael Young leads the league in hits, and Darin Ruf and Domonic Brown live up to the hype. In this imaginary land, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee are Cy Young candidates once again, Cole Hamels has a 2.79 ERA, and Kyle Kendrick has a 3.22 ERA....

Baseball Prospectus Offers Unique Phillies Top 10

Baseball Prospectus released their Top 10 Phillies prospects list today. Like Baseball America and Minor League Ball before them, which we covered here and here, BP named lefty Jesse Biddle the Phillies Top Prospect for 2013. BP says Biddle is a legitimate Top 100 prospect in baseball. After Biddle, however, there are quite a few surprises. Strong Placing for Franco Maikel Franco...

Deciphering the “Cubs Way”: Replacing the house of cards with a house of bricks

Here’s the deal.  We know that prospects are important in baseball.  We know that one of the primary methods of acquiring these prospects is through the amateur draft, and that the guys who are picked early are usually the most likely to succeed in the major leagues, which intuitively makes sense. We know that a team is more likely to succeed in the regular season and make the...

Off-season League Notes: 1/13/13

It’s time, once again, to travel around the globe as we review how Phillies talents are performing in off-season and winter leagues.  Be warned that news is becoming quite limited, as the closer things get to spring training, the less there is to report. In the Caribbean Leagues, teams have begun playing in their second wave of the season, as the top four teams from the Dominican...

Aumont, Gillies, Orr Named to Team Canada

Aumont will be joined by teammates Gillies and Orr on Team Canada's 23-man roster. Canada was among the first countries to submit their provisional 23-man World Baseball Classic rosters and it has a distinctly Phillies’ flavor. Reliever Phillippe Aumont will look to recreate the magic of his 2009 appearance on Team Canada and is joined by Phillies OF prospect Tyson Gillies...

Deciphering the “Cubs Way”: Using the best materials and craftsmanship to build the house

Yesterday, we outlined the mess the new front office had to clean up.  Today, unencumbered by playoff football and random awards shows, let’s try to figure out how they may work towards that goal in regards to player development. The Way of the Pitcher Once upon a time, I happened upon an article about the Minnesota Twins’ minor league pitcher development program.  There was...
