Phillies starting pitcher Joe Blantonwas traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers today after being claimed off of waivers.

Just because the non-waiver trade deadline has passed doesn’t mean the Phillies are done dealing. The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed right hander Joe Blanton off of waivers today and the Phillies and Dodgers worked out a deal that will send cash considerations or a player to be named later to the Phillies.

Joe Blanton was set to start tonight as the Phillies return home to start a series against Arizona. Kyle Kendrick will start in Blanton’s place.

Joe Blanton was acquired from the Oakland Athletics in 2008 by former Phillies GM Pat Gillick for a package of prospects including Gio Gonzalez. Blanton’s impact was immediate as he shored up the Phillies pitching rotation and the team went undefeated in games he started down the stretch. Blanton, while often maligned, will always be remembered for hitting a Home Run in the 2008 World Series against Edwin Jackson, then with the Rays.

While Blanton’s time in Philly was often tainted by trade rumors and a lack of appreciation from the fans, he did a solid job for the Phillies. Blanton was often overlooked and forgotten about on a rotation full of aces. He never let it bother him and went about his business outside of the spotlight.

With the departure of Blanton, only Cole Hamels, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are leftover from 2008 World Series team.
