Pirates 3B addresses report about future with team

93.7 The Fan's Colin Dunlap said earlier this week that he's heard that the 26-year-old and his father (former longtime infielder Charlie Hayes) aren't happy. According to a report by Andrew Limberg of KDKA-FM Radio Pittsburgh, the elder Hayes has "been in his son's ear" regarding the matter.

"He’s given the impression that he probably wouldn’t resist being put on the trade block, if it came to that," Dunlap said on "The Cook and Joe Show," per Limberg's report.

The report also said that Dunlap "is hearing" that the 58-year-old Hayes doesn't think his son has a good chance of winning with the Pirates.

The Buccos haven't made the playoffs since 2015 and haven't won (or been to) a World Series since 1979. Pittsburgh was red-hot to start the 2023 season, going 20-9 through April, but are now 41-54 and in last place in the NL Central.

Hayes is currently on the 10-day injured list due to a back issue that has been a persistent problem in his young career.

He was one of the top prospects in baseball between the time he was selected 32nd overall by the Pirates in the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft and when he made his big-league debut in September 2020. Hayes showed promise early on, earning the NL Rookie of the Month Award following his debut, and ended the 2020 campaign with five home runs, 11 RBIs, seven doubles and a .376/.442/.682 slash line over 85 at-bats in 24 games.

He missed much of the first half of the 2021 campaign with a wrist injury and was limited to 96 games. After signing an eight-year contract extension shortly before Opening Day 2022, Hayes posted an underwhelming .244/.314/.345 triple slash last year with just seven home runs and 41 RBIs over 136 games.

Through 290 at-bats covering 75 contests this season, Hayes has five home runs and 32 RBIs, as well as a career-low .290 on-base percentage.
