A walk off homer by Andrew McCutchen gave the Bucs a thrilling 12-inning win over the Brewers on Tuesday night. Cutch had hit two balls very well earlier in the game only to see them die at the warning track, and he had suffered a similar fate in Monday’s game. When he flew out to the right-center field wall in the seventh, though, it showed that he was ready to go off – he’s at his best when he’s driving the ball to that part of the park. The bomb leading off the 12th was to the same part of the field – but that time it cleared the wall. (Cutch wasn’t sure at first.) There were several other nice things about the game besides the walk off blast. Jeff Locke posted a quality start – he allowed some more hits than his past few games, resulting in three runs – but he struck out six, walked one, and went six innings. That’s a good outing.  Jeff lasted longer than Brewers starter Kyle Lohse, who walked five and allowed five hits. The Bucs scored twice against him but couldn’t come up wi...

Here’s Andrew McCutchen’s Fourth Career Walk-off Home Run

One of our favorite players around the league, The Dread Pirate is finding his way once again. We were actually watching this game live (illegally – MLB blackout restrictions can’t keep us down) when McCutchen went boom off the last arm in the Brewers bullpen, poor Mike Fiers. Pirates win 4-3 in a thriller. And the Pirates are hanging tough at 22-17. They’re not going to the...

Pirates Pregame: Martin Back in the Lineup

Russell Martin is back in the lineup for the Pirates tonight, playing catcher and hitting seventh. Martin said the soreness in his neck that has kept him out of a handful of recent games is gone. “There was soreness in there. you can play through some soreness but when it’s your neck and you’re playing a position where there can be some contact  you want your neck to feel...

Minor League Schedule: 5/15/13

Both Bradenton and West Virginia have morning start times today. Indianapolis has an early afternoon game, while Altoona plays the only night game. Stolmy Pimentel will be on the mound for the Curve, looking to bounce back from his only bad start of the season. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable Pitchers Chart. We have added...

Inge solid off Pirates bench

The Pirates activated infielder Brandon Inge from the disabled list in late April. The veteran has given them a strong presence off the bench, batting .273 in 16 games with three RBI. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko caught up with Inge recently.

Dare We Suspect That Carlos Gomez’ Performance is Enhanced?

(Photo: Mark J. Terrill/Associated Press) It’s obvious that Carlos Gomez’ performance in the early part of 2013 is enhanced compared to previous seasons.  These days, remarkable production can lead to speculation that a player might not be enhancing appropriately.  Last week, The Brewer Nation included a post partially titled “In Defense of Carlos Gomez,” which recounted...

Game 40 Preview: Pirates vs. Brewers

Brewers (16-21) at Pirates (22-17) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs look to take control of this week’s series with the Brewers after a dramatic victory last night. Pregame news: Remember all that complaining we did when Jordy Mercer was sent to the minors on Monday and John McDonald remained with the team? Well, that situation has been rectified ...

Pirates 3, Brewers 1

The Bucs knocked off the Brew Crew again on Wednesday night, making it two in a row and three out of four against Milwaukee. They own the Brewers! Wandy Rodriguez was excellent – far better than he was the last time he faced these Brewers. He pitched much like he did in his first few starts of the year – lots of strikes and quick outs with a couple hits mixed in but minimal solid...

Fun with Anagrams (The Brewers Edition) Part One - Created by Diane Firstman

Recently, Diane Firstman, creator and curator of the fabulous Value Over Replacement Grit baseball site on ESPN Sweetspot Network and a favorite of mine, was kind enough to anagram the names of some current and former Milwaukee Brewers players and managers. She made quite a few for the Brewers Bar to use, so this will be split up into a series. Not sure what an anagram is? An...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers – Game 41

The last time the Pirates won back to back games against the Brewers it was in a span of two series.  The first win came on August 24th, 2-0, the second win came on September 26th, 9-8. You have to go all the way back to July 2010 to see the last time the Pirates…

Brewers look to keep offense going for Lohse

Runs have been difficult to come by at times for the Milwaukee Brewers, and scoring essentially has been a problem each time Kyle Lohse pitches. Reversing that trend, though, may not be easy against Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jeff Locke, who takes the mound at home Tuesday night. The Brewers (16-20) have been outscored by 25 runs while losing nine of 11 this month, beginning with...

Bucs Bring In A Mercernary

John Mcdonald had back pain DL DL L. And from that pain the Pirates gain, DL DL L. John McDonald has been placed on the 15 Day DL after he tweaked his lower back last night.  No loss for the Pirates because he isn’t very good. Or young.  Or versatile.  Or cost effective. Taking his…

Barrel Man Ale Is a Great Name for a Beer

I’ve been a big backer of Owgust, the Barrel Man, and it’s been very cool to see him pop up prominently in the Brewers’ recent YOUniform contest (here’s hoping Ben’s design with the Barrel Man becomes part of the regular-season uniform options).  Seriously, Barrel Man rules, Ball ‘N Glove drools.  I do love the Ball ‘N Glove (or Ball in Glove or Ball and Glove...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers – Game 39

After last night’s loss the Pirates are on track. On track for what?  One of two things.  The first is another disappointing series against the Brewers.  The second, and the one I’m hanging my hat on, is another four game series win.  The Pirates have won every four game series.  They’ve also lost the first game…

Brewers rumors: Milwaukee offered Jean Segura contract extension

Last month, the Milwaukee Brewers offered top young shortstop Jean Segura a long-term contract extension, his agent, Joe Klein, tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. “They contacted me,” Klein said of the Brewers. “Right now, I guess it’s in my court. But with a guy this young, it’s hard to figure out what the right numbers would be. It would be good, be nice if it...
