The Pirates used a barrage of homers and another stellar outing from Jeff Locke to knock off the Brewers at Miller Park on Saturday afternoon. Locke was tremendous yet again. The lefty has now allowed three hits or less in six of his last seven outings, which is ridiculous. I know, I know, some more are going to start falling in against him sooner or later, but it’s impossible not to be impressed with Jeff at this point. He’s also been doing much better in both the strikeout and walk departments lately. Today he got seven K’s and walked three. He wasn’t tremendously efficient, but got through six innings with exactly 100 pitches. It’s also worth noting that the Brewers used a mostly right-handed lineup – and of course, the game was at hitter friendly Miller Park. Fantastic work by Locke – again. Meanwhile, the Bucco offense exploded for some long balls – a welcome sight because they hadn’t hit one since Snider’s grand slam on Tuesday. Andrew McCutchen – who entered the game with three homers in nine at bats against starter Mike Fiers – lined one out in the first inning. That was his third homer against Fiers in three consecutive at bats against him – a pretty remarkable feat (3 HR in 3 consecutive AB vs one pitcher) that has only been done four times in Pirates history (per ROOT Sports). Pedro Alvarez extended the Bucs’ lead with a two run blast in the second, but that one was downright wimpy compared to the second bomb he hit in the ninth. He took Alfredo Figaro to the top of the second deck in right-center…certainly one of the longest we’ve seen Pedro hit, which is saying quite a lot. Here’s the video. Neil Walker hit the fourth Bucco homer – a solo shot in the fourth that was pretty darn long in its own right. Justin Wilson and Tony Watson both allowed solo homers to Carlos Gomez, accounting for the two Brewers runs. Mark Melancon pitched a perfect 11 pitch eighth, because it was just a three run lead at the time before Pedro went deep in the ninth. Solid win for the Bucs – great to see them get the long ball going (although they missed several other opportunities with men on base) and pitch well in Milwaukee. They’ve now won 2 of their last 3 there! Pirates 5, Brewers 2 / Box / 2013 Record: 30-19 / Next: Sunday, at Brewers, 2:10 Source: FanGraphs
