MLB Injury News:
The Pittsburgh Pirates have run their record up and taken the top spot in the National League Central and in all of baseball. To make things even more impressive, they've done this without A.J. Burnett. However, Burnett could be returning to action soon. The 36-year old righty has been on the DL since mid-June with a strained calf.
Steve Petrella of MLB.com says Burnett's simulated game on Tuesday went well and he is scheduled for a bullpen session today. The bullpen session will largely determine where the Pirates go with Burnett next. If he feels good, the former ace may be able to avoid a rehab start and return to the rotation.
"How he feels with that could put him in a position to return to pitch," manager Clint Hurdle said.
Burnett is nearing the end of his career and there have been rumors that he will retire after this season, but since he joined the Pirates, Burnett's career has been rejuvenated. He has a 3.39 ERA in his two seasons with Pittsburgh. That is the lowest of his career for any other team he's pitched.

The Pirates are 51-31. They are the only team with a winning percentage over .600. Part of this comes from the success they have had in their pitching staff. Burnett, in 14 starts this season, has a 3.12 ERA. If he returns from the DL and continues that way, the Pirates should be in good shape.

Garrett Jones HR gets stuck in fan's cup. Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Garrett Jones hit a home run to center field that got stuck in a fan's empty cup during Tuesday night's game at PNC Park against the Philadelphia Phillies. It’s Saturday in Pittsburgh, a hot but tolerable 76-degree evening with a late sunset. Tonight, a full PNC Park will watch Dan Fox beat Rickie Weeks at baseball.
Dan Fox is 45 years old, tall but hardly wiry, bald and framed by Oakley glasses. His former internet...
Pirates infielder Brandon Inge donned these crazy looking contact lenses for Pittsburgh’s Wednesday night game against the Phillies, which I guess was OK seeing that Inge didn’t play a lick in the 6-5 win. Not sure if Inge was going for the Michael Jackson look in the Thriller video, or the “this is what your eyes will look like if you get laser surgery from an unlicensed physician”...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with two more draft picks today. They signed sixth round draft pick Adam Frazier, a shortstop out of Mississippi State. They have also signed 37th round draft pick Andrew Dennis, a catcher from Wallace State Community College.
More details to come on these two players.

The 6th inning sunk the Pirates’ chances for another series win, as the Philadelphia Phillies collected four hits and four runs off Gerrit Cole and Vin Mazzaro to grab the Independence Day victory 6-4.
Cole entered with just 60 pitches and struck out Jimmy...
This game turned on a quick sequence in that went like this: Andrew McCutchen single, Gaby Sanchez single on the next pitch, Russell Martin RBI single two pitches later, Pedro Alvarez three-run homer two pitches after that. That turned a frustrating 1-0 Phillies lead into a 4-1 PIrate lead. That gave the second half of the game a very different tone.
Specifically, it was the...

Brandon Inge may have scared the crap out of everyone watching the Pittsburgh Pirates-Philadelphia Phillies game on Wednesday. The Pittsburgh utility man decided to wear some color contact lenses for the game that had his eyes shaped like those of a cat. The lsenses were colored black and yellow to match the Pirates’ colors. But [...]
Pittsburgh Pirates rookie starter Gerrit Cole, after registering wins in each of his first four career starts, was handed his first career loss on Thursday as the Pirates fell to the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6-4.
Coming into Thursday’s contest, Cole boasted a 4-0 record and 3.70 ERA over 24 1/3 innings in four starts. Despite the loss, Cole was solid in his effort, working...
