Found July 16, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the strongest pursuers for right-handed pitcher Matt Garza, according to David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com. However, they’ve got company. Kaplan lists the Pirates as one of six teams who are strongly pursuing the Cubs right-hander, also naming Texas, St. Louis, Cleveland, Toronto, and the Dodgers. This isn’t the first we’ve heard the Pirates connected to Garza. A week ago Jon Morosi said the Pirates were one of five teams who had a scout watching Garza. The “scout in attendance” rumors can sometimes be misleading. The Pirates did have a scout watching Garza, but that scout could have been there for Nate Schierholtz. This is the first time we’ve heard that the Pirates are actually pursuing Garza. One thing that has changed in the last week is that the extension talks with Garza have fallen through. Jon Heyman reported on Sunday that the Cubs informed Garza he is likely to be traded. Heyman mentioned a lot of teams interested, but didn’t mention the Pirates. It seems the consensus is that the Rangers are the most likely destination for Garza. Kaplan mentions that teams don’t view Garza as a number one or two, but a strong number three, and that the Cubs are asking for an exceptionally high price. He brings up the Zack Greinke trade, which landed Jean Segura and two prospects for the Milwaukee Brewers. Kaplan cites the consensus of several baseball personnel experts saying the Cubs won’t match that deal, but should come close. Honestly I can’t see the Pirates landing Garza. I think Texas would be more likely to out-bid them for prospects. I also think the pitching this year has been good enough and should stay good enough that the Pirates shouldn’t have to deal a top prospect for two months of Garza.

Chicago Cubs News and Notes: Matt Garza, Javier Beaz and more

This Cubs Matt Garza news and notes column is from TSB new contributor Jeremy Harris. In a gutsy performance, which could be his last as a Cub, starter Matt Garza tossed 6 2/3 innings, yielding ten hits and two walks, while striking out four. While in most of his recent performances he was working with few runners on base, tonight he pitched out of several jams. So while he was not...

It is very likely that the Cubs deal Matt Garza, but we don't know where he'll land. The teams interested in Garza are the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Pirates, Indians and others, but it appears that the AL teams are in the lead in the Garza race and by a wide margain, according to this report from Tom Loxas of Cubs Now: Would be...

Cubs Rumors: Matt Garza race heating up

The Chicago Cubs appear to have serious suitors as the race to acquire Matt Garza continues. While no deal appears likely within the next 24-48 hours, it does look likely that Garza has pitched his last game in a Cubs uniform. It appears that the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks are in the lead in the Matt Garza race, with the Red Sox right behind them. There is...

Trade Values: Matt Garza

Earlier today we heard that the Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the teams strongly pursuing Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza. Garza has been linked to the Pirates a few times in the last week. I would be shocked if the Pirates end up trading for him, but I will take a look at his trade value to see what he would cost (or should cost), and to analyze why I don’t think the...

Status Of Buchholz Will Impact Matt Garza Deal

Getty ImagesMultiple reports suggest that whether the Red Sox make a deal to get Matt Garza is highly dependent on how they see the immediate future of Clay Buchholz. If their ace right-hander continues to struggle with a bizarre neck/shoulder injury (he hasn't pitched since June 8th), then they will hotly pursue their former AL East pitching rival. Garza has been told in no...

All-Star Break Rumor Thread

Not that there will be too many over the break, most of the league takes a vacation along with the players, but Kaplan is spinning his wheels on a Matt Garza one. I'm hearing Garza will be traded by Sat. Cubs won't move him though until they get what they want. They won't panic out of fear of injury. An AL scout just told me that he thinks Garza is throwing so well that...

Ideal landing spots for top MLB trade deadline targets

The trade deadline is fast approaching and thus far there has been very little activity on the trade market. That isn't due to a lack of options though as there are a number of quality players who seem quite likely to get moved between now and July 31st. The question isn't so much if those players will get dealt but when and where. Alas, the trade market is an imperfect market...

The free agent to be has been the most coveted player on the open market this July and it appears that he finally will be traded. The teams interested in Matt Garza, according to Jim Bowden...

Dodger Pitching Help Hot Stove Update

The Dodgers do not appear to have an imminent move in place to acquire another starting pitcher.  Division rival Arizona currently is considered a “Dark Horse Candidate” to pick up the Chicago Cubs’ Matt Garza according to mlbtraderumors.com. The cost on Garza is believed to be high, and it does not appear that the Dodgers are interested in picking up Garza, especially in...

Ranaudo (L) & Cecchini (R)Reports are surfacing that Theo Epstein will demand both Anthony Ranaudo and Garin Cecchini in a trade for Matt Garza. Cecchini is tearing it up in AAA, while Ranaudo (despite the shelling he took at the Futures Game on Sunday) is having a good year at AA Portland. The question for Ben Cherington is whether two months of Garza is worth your #3 (Cecchini...

Examining Possible Returns for Matt Garza

It’s the All-Star break, and while they aren’t allowed to announced trades during this time, there is no doubt that Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are hard at work trying to trade starting pitcher Matt Garza before his next start.  Garza is probably the best available player at the trading deadline, and could instantly step in and help a contender push toward the playoffs.  He...

First Pitch: Giving Some Perspective to Trade Rumors
