The Pirates have called up Jeff Clement from Triple-A Indianapolis and swapped Yamaico Navarro to Indy to clear his spot. Clement will be back in the majors for the first time since 2010. This isn’t a very big move by any means; just a bench swap. Clement provides some power from the left side, and has had a pretty solid and consistent season in Indianapolis. He hit 16 homers with Indy and posted a .276 average and .825 OPS over 112 games. We last saw Clement in Pittsburgh two years ago, when the Pirates experiment of making him their full-time first baseman failed miserably (.201 with 7 homers over 54 games). He certainly won’t be getting starts over Garrett Jones (or even Gaby Sanchez) any time soon, but should provide a better pinch-hit option than what the Pirates were working with over the last few weeks. Plenty of people have been calling for him for a while now–and while I don’t see him as a big solution to anything, I certainly don’t have a problem with bringing him up. I do...

A Healthy Clement Ready for Opportunity with Pittsburgh

It’s been a long journey back to the big leagues for Jeff Clement. But on Friday, the first baseman was given the opportunity to battle his way back when the Pirates selected him from Triple-A Indianapolis to join the club in Pittsburgh. Clement, who was Pittsburgh’s Opening Day first baseman in 2010, made his last appearance in a Major League game with the Pirates on August...

Juan Cruz Cleared Waivers and Released by Pirates

Juan Cruz cleared outright waivers, and refused his assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis. The right-hander has been released by the organization. Cruz, 33, signed as a minor league free agent in February, and broke camp out of spring training with the club. The veteran posted a 2.78 ERA over 35.2 innings in relief this season with Pittsburgh. Cruz also spent some time on the disabled...

Before we get to the former players, we have a current player celebrating a birthday. Pitcher Kevin Correia turns 32 today. He...

Saturday 8/25 Minor League Roundup

AAA Indianapolis | Indianapolis 8 Columbus 6 The Indians received great contributions from their starting pitching and offense today, but the bullpen nearly ruined it until a heroic showing in the team's final at-bat outlasted rival Columbus. It was a good day for McEffect overall in Indianapolis, as the non-brothers McPherson earned the gold stars for the day. Starter Kyle...

Zack Von Rosenberg Still Dealing With Fastball Inconsistency

Von Rosenberg has struggled as of late, after a strong July. Instead of heading to the minors after spring training ended, the Pirates organization decided to keep Zack Von Rosenberg in extended Spring Training to focus on two things: keeping the ball down and repeating his delivery. The right-hander worked hard and joined Low-A West Virginia on June 4th. “Just being consistent...

Brewers-Pirates Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates' push for their first playoff appearance in 20 years has slowed considerably. Given the Pirates' recent history against the Milwaukee Brewers, it's far from a guarantee that will change over the weekend. Exactly one year after their last meeting at PNC Park, Pittsburgh will try to end a three-game losing streak Friday night when the Brewers go...

Bad Economics Strike The Bucs Again

Reported first by ESPN and then I saw the same report for John Heyman of CBS, the Dodgers have just claimed Adrian Gonzalez off waivers from the Red Sox.  That is the type of piece to the puzzle the Pirates would love to have.   But they would have absolutely no chance to sign him.  He would cost the Pirates as much as Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker’s soon to be contract, and...

NOOOOO: Buccos’ skid hits 4

After last night’s 6-5 loss to the Brewers, the Pirates have now lost 4 straight. The last time that happened, it was June and the Buccos were just 1 game over .500. This time around, the Bucs are 9 games over breaking even – they haven’t been within single digits of .500 since mid-July…and there’s still a long way to go before the streak is officially over. yea, weâ€...
