Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star closer Jason Grilli's comeback from a right arm injury is picking up speed. Grilli threw 25 pain-free pitches during a simulated game on Wednesday, a major step toward his return from an injury that blunted the momentum of a career year. The 36-year-old has been on the disabled list since straining the right flexor tendon in his pitching arm during a 6-5 victory over Washington on July 22. Barring a setback, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle expects Grilli to make rehabilitation appearance for Double-A Altoona on Saturday. ''My arm strength is there,'' Grilli said. ''People want to see if my arm strength is going to be there, it's there.'' The righthander made the All-Star team for the first time and was second in the National League with 30 saves at the time of the injury. Grilli said he won't rush back even as the Pirates battle St. Louis and Cincinnati for the NL Central title. ''I'm going day by ...

Starling Marte hangs up fan's artwork in dugout

Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder Starling Marte is currently on the 15-day DL with a sprained finger. Marte has been one of the key components to the Pirates' success this year, and has become quite a fan favorite in Pittsburgh as a result. Before Thursday night's game with the Brewers, Marte noticed a fan with a hand-drawn "get well Starling" sign along with a...

Pirates Notebook: What Now for Jose Tabata?

Prohibitively, the addition of Marlon Byrd makes the Pittsburgh Pirates a better baseball team. Had Byrd been on the Pirates’ roster all season, he’d essentially be the third-best hitter on the team. And, the Pirates may own three or four extra wins if he started 2013 in Pittsburgh with his WAR of 3.5. In contrast, the production received from right field this season from the...

Pirates Playoff Odds After Trading for Marlon Byrd, John Buck

Acquiring Marlon Byrd did not swing the playoff odds too much, but Wednesday night’s win certainly did. (Photo Credit: David Hague) It would take a Hindenburg-esque crash for the Pirates to miss the MLB postseason (98-percent chance Bucs make it), but it is unlikely they will take the NL Central over the St. Louis Cardinals (32 percent). The Bucs can shoulder some blame. The Pirates...

Byrd Homers in Debut, Morton Fires a Gem as Pirates Win 7-1

Marlon Byrd didn’t have the game-winning hit or even the knockout blow, really, when the Pirates beat the Brewers Wednesday. But, the Pirates’ newest addition to the starting lineup made the most noise with a three-run home run over the center field fence and into the bushes that broke open a 4-1 ballgame in the bottom of the seventh. “It was one of those things, you come to...

Pirates demote Jeff Locke to Double-A

Struggling Pirates starting pitcher Jeff Locke has gone from potential Cy Young candidate to Double-A player in the span of about a month. The Pirates optioned the 2013 All-Star to Altoona Wednesday the club announced in a press release. Catcher Tony Sanchez was also sent to Altoona. “This move allows us to give Jeff Locke a short break” general manager Neal Huntington said...

Injury News: Progress on All Fronts

Prior to tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, a bushel of information came out regarding the Pirates’ veritable laundry list of current injuries. More important and relevant than any other news is that closer Jason Grilli threw a 25-pitch simulated game this afternoon and may make a rehab outing Saturday in Double-A Altoona. Jason Grilli will make a rehab outing with...

Pirates put Byrd to work

Marlon Byrd had been in the Pittsburgh Pirates' clubhouse for all of five minutes when the newly acquired right fielder found his name penciled in as the cleanup hitter Wednesday night against Milwaukee. Asked if he was surprised about being thrown into the lineup so quickly, the 12-year veteran the Pirates hope will help ignite a sagging offense just smiled. ''Of course...

DSL Prospect Watch: Vivas, Herrera Keep Pirates2 Alive in 6-5 Victory Over Tigers

The Dominican Summer League playoffs continued today as the Pirates2 returned home facing elimination against the Tigers DSL affiliate after losing 10-0 yesterday in the opener of a best-of-three game series. The Pirates2 went with 19-year-old righty Julio Vivas on the mound. He went 5-2, 2.30 on the year and pitched even better at home, going 2-0, 0.75 in six starts.  After being...

Mets trade Marlon Byrd on Marlon Byrd shirt day

As they say, timing is everything!  The New York Mets timing has been off all year, this time as they dealt OF Marlon Byrd to the Pittsburgh Pirates on the SAME DAY they planned to give away T-shirts to fans in his honor.  According to Ted Berg of “For the Win” (via USA Today), “Let it Fly” Marlon Byrd themed jerseys were poised for distribution as part of the Mets “T...

Preview: Cards to test Pirates in critical weekend series

The Pittsburgh Pirates grabbed the NL Central lead from St. Louis when the Cardinals visited PNC Park one month ago, taking four of five to set the wheels in motion for a run at their first division title since 1992.The next 10 days should determine just how realistic that possibility may be.Now a game behind the Cardinals, the Pirates hope Francisco Liriano can pull them into a...

Game 132: Pirates 7 Brewers 1

Really, I'm not sure that I can pick my favorite moment from this game. Marlon Byrd's game-sealing three-run homer into centerfield bushes followed by a simultaneous Steve Blass and Twitter explosion of Byrd puns was pretty great, but all it really did was put the finishing touches on a game that had looked like a win for a while. For my money, I'm not sure I've ever...

Game 133: Brewers 4 Pirates 0

The linescore makes this obvious, but this game was really decided in the first couple of innings. Neither starter came out with his best stuff, but the Brewers were able to capitalize on the rustiness that Gerrit Cole had after a longer-than-normal laoyff, while the Pirates left runners littered all over the bases against Yovani Gallardo despite hitting the ball awfully hard against...

Gerrit Cole faces the Brewers with a chance to return to first

The Cardinals are off tonight, which means that the Pirates can move back into a first place tie with a win over the Brewers. Gerrit Cole gets the ball and will try to do just that for the Bucs tonight. His last start at PNC was in almost as big of a spot, as he started against the Diamondbacks after the Pirates lost two of three to the Cardinals, and he turned in an excellent six...
