Found December 26, 2012 on Pirates Prospects:
PLAYERS: Chad Beck
TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated reliever Chad Beck for assignment. That clears a spot on the 40-man roster for today’s trade. Beck can be outrighted to Triple-A if he clears waivers. The right-hander was claimed off waivers in October from Toronto, probably so the Pirates could try to sneak him through later in the off-season. He throws 94-97 MPH, but has control issues.

First Pitch: What is the Next Move For the Pirates?

Could Garrett Jones be the next to go? – Photo by Mark Olson After Jason Grilli was signed, we waited for the other shoe to drop with a Joel Hanrahan trade. Now that the Hanrahan trade is completed, we’re left waiting for another shoe to drop. One of the big returns in the deal was Jerry Sands, who joins a crowded corner outfield/first base situation. That crowded situation already...

Why I like Mark Melancon

The biggest reason I’m OK with the Joel Hanrahan trade is the inclusion of reliever Mark Melancon. The other three guys are pretty big question marks, although I think Jerry Sands has a good chance of at least being decent in a platoon-ish role. Still, Melancon is just as (if not more) valuable than Hanrahan in my eyes, largely because he’s under team control through 2016 and...

Pirates Trade Joel Hanrahan to Red Sox in Six-Player Deal

Today, it was announced that the Pirates and Red Sox had, indeed finalized a deal that sends RHP Joel Hanrahan and 2B Brock Holt to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for RHP Mark Melancon, OF/1B Jerry Sands, 2B Ivan De Jesus, and RHP Stolmy Pimentel. Hanrahan, 31, was acquired by Pittsburgh in 2009 from the Washington Nationals and served as the team’s closer the past two seasons...

First Pitch: The Pirates Payroll and a Realistic View on Salary Dumps

When the Pirates make a move that cuts salary — such as what happened in the Joel Hanrahan trade — you hear the usual “salary dump” cries. Technically the move was a salary dump. The Pirates saved about $6.5 M in the move. Dumping salary might have even been a key reason to make the move. The Pirates recently signed Francisco Liriano to a two-year, $12.75 M deal. So the salary...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Reviewing Neal Huntington’s drafts- 2008

If only they’d kept Littlefield locked up on draft day; Image credit poetry in pros The slow months of the offseason provide a nice opportunity to reflect back on the organization’s draft choices over the past 5 years, and gauge their levels of success.  Assuming the GM reigns in October of 2007, current GM Neal Huntington had adequate time to prepare for his first draft the...

Winter Leagues Recap: Updates on Newest Pirates

With the trade between the Red Sox and Pirates completed, it adds two more names to the Winter League mix. Both Ivan DeJesus and Stolmy Pimentel came over to the Pirates yesterday from the Red Sox as part of the return for Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt. They have also both played Winter ball this year, although it looks like Pimentel is done for the season. Ivan DeJesus played last...

Hanrahan, Holt Deal Done; Four Players Traded Away

It's not quite a megadeal, but it's pretty big. Joel Hanrahan will become the Sox closer, and infielder Brock Holt (pictured) will join the team. Hanrahan is 31 and one of the National League's best closers. Holt is 24, and hit well last season, but only played 24 games.Gone are Jerry Sands, Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel, and Ivan De Jesus. Sands and De Jesus were acquired...

Grilli’s Fastball Keys Resurgence

Jason Grilli was just a guy Neal Huntington plucked out of the Phillies’ minor league system back in 2011, yet another nebulous asset added in the Pirates’ attempts to rebuild on the cheap. Two years later, a 34-year-old once with little but gas and a prayer could be Pittsburgh’s opening day closer. He turned 2011′s resurgence into a full breakout relief season in 2012 ...

Pirates Trade Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt to the Red Sox

After hearing on Sunday that there will be no news on the Pirates and Red Sox deal for Joel Hanrahan until after Christmas, we hear news this afternoon from Peter Gammons on Twitter that the deal is done. No details as of yet, but if he is saying the deal is done, I’d expect them shortly. -JD They were right. The Hanrahan deal was finished after Christmas, as in done today, Boxing...

Pirates, Red Sox complete Joel Hanrahan trade

The long-rumored trade between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox that would send Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan to Boston has been completed. Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt will be sent to the Red Sox, and in return, Pittsburgh will receive pitcher Stolmy Pimental, reliever Mark Melancon, outfielder Jerry Sands, and shortstop Ivan DeJesus Jr.  In case you missed it...

Red Sox Acquire Joel Hanrahan From Pirates

The Red Sox officially acquired closer Joel Hanrahan from the Pirates on Wednesday in a six-player deal with Pittsburgh. The Sox sent two of the players they acquired from the Dodgers in last summer’s salary dump — first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands and infielder Ivan De Jesus — to Pittsburgh, along with pitchers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimental. In addition, the...

Pirates and Red Sox finalize Joel Hanrahan deal

The Pirates and Red Sox didn't waste much time after Christmas to get the Joel Hanrahan trade finalized, and the result isn't much different than what we were all speculating about back on December 23rd. We already knew the deal was going to involve Hanrahan going to the Red Sox with Jerry Sands, Stolmy Pimentel, and probably Mark Melancon coming to the Pirates. The teams...

Hanrahan Trade Finally Done.

The players going to Boston are Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt.  Two fan favorites.  In fact it only seems like the Pirates trade fan favorites. Fan love means little to me. The Pirates will get Jerry Sands and Stolmy Pimentel.  We covered that part of the trade earlier. The addition of Brock Holt to the [...]

Joel Hanrahan Trade Strengthens Red Sox’ Bullpen, But True Impact of Deal Relies on a Few Factors

Red Sox fans received a lot of hip joke material on Wednesday, as the club announced that it has acquired closer Joel Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt from the Pirates in exchange for Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimental, Jerry Sands and Ivan De Jesus. The sooner we get all of the Steve Holt Arrested Development gags and Tommy Hanrahan Slap Shot puns out of the way, though, the sooner...
