Found August 27, 2013 on i70baseball:
A day after major changes for both franchises, the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets completed a trade that alters the remainder of the season for both. The Mets were told their ace pitcher, Matt Harvey, would miss the remainder of the season due to a UCL tear.  Meanwhile, the Pirates fell out of first place when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds in dramatic fashion.  The events of yesterday got the gears turning for both clubs and an agreement was reached. The news was first reported by Anthony DiComo, the Mets beat writer for MLB.com. The Pirates have acquired Marlon Byrd and John Buck from the Mets in exchange for second base prospect Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later. Byrd is the notable piece of the deal for the Pirates as his stellar play this season shores up an outfield that has struggled for consistency.  His bat plugs nicely into the heart of the Pirates order and he brings with him 21 home runs and 71 runs batted in.  He has continued to...

Mets trade Marlon Byrd on Marlon Byrd shirt day

As they say, timing is everything!  The New York Mets timing has been off all year, this time as they dealt OF Marlon Byrd to the Pittsburgh Pirates on the SAME DAY they planned to give away T-shirts to fans in his honor.  According to Ted Berg of “For the Win” (via USA Today), “Let it Fly” Marlon Byrd themed jerseys were poised for distribution as part of the Mets “T...

Holy UCL Batman! Mets In Trouble Without Matt Harvey!

Matt Harvey might as well play on Twitter because he’s not going to be pitching for the New York Mets any time soon. Last night, while his teammates outside of Marlon Byrd and John Buck were taking batting practice, Harvey mustered all his strength to tweet: “Thank you everyone for the kind words and support. I may be done this year, but I will be back next year for April 1.’’...

Matt Harvey and overcoming the loss of a star

Matt Harvey's injury would be a terrible blow to the Mets under any circumstances. But contending teams have enough depth to overcome, or at least mitigate, the damage. The Mets will finally be a contender again when an awful day like this one does not have people writing off the next season. In February 2011, Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright was found to need Tommy John surgery...

The Mets To Honor Matt Harvey With Commemorative Patch

The New York Mets are doing everything in their power to help Matt Harvey through his injury. Today the Mets placed their ace on the Disabled List today with a tear in his UCL. It is unclear whether or not Harvey will need to have Tommy John Surgery. Later on the team announced that they will wear a commemorative patch in Harvey’s honor for the remainder of his stint on the...

Mets’ Matt Harvey likely to undergo Tommy John Surgery

New York Mets ace Matt Harvey is done for the 2013 season after the team had discovered a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. This was announced today and Tommy John surgery is likely to be performed although other options are still being evaluated. It is a tough blow for a team that is looking for some hope going into next year because if Harvey is to undergo...

Matt Harvey Has A Torn Elbow Ligament, Could Require Tommy John Surgery

The poor Mets. Mets ace and Cy Young candidate Matt Harvey will likely spend the rest of the season on the bench, as he has been diagnosed with a tear of his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). The results came via MRI on Monday and he will more than likely be shut down for the rest of the season, and will probably require Tommy John surgery to fix the damage. At today’s press...

Victor Black is the PTBNL in the Marlon Byrd deal

This news came across right before last night's game started, which means it's a little stale now, but I think it's worth mentioning that Victor Black will go to the Mets as the player to be named in the Marlon Byrd/John Buck trade. Black is a really nice relief prospect and he's been mentioned as the "Closer of the Future" for the Pirates, but that means...

The Loss Of Harvey Should Not Alter Our Plans For 2014

From the day that Sandy Alderson first took the reins as the Mets new general manager during the 2010 offseason, we’ve all been conditioned to believe that 2014, his fourth year on the job, would signal the beginning of something special. By the end of the 2012 season, Matt Harvey emerged as the poster child for the new and exciting era that lied ahead for the franchise. And why...

Harvey to have more tests on his elbow

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey is going to have more tests on his ailing elbow but after a few weeks of rest. The teams current plan is for Harvey to rest for three weeks and then go get more tests. Harvey is hoping to avoid surgery and hopes that rest will help him do so. Alderson said that Harvey will still wait a few weeks before deciding whether or not to have Tommy John...

Matt Harvey Diagnosed with Torn UCL

Sometimes, baseball is just cruel. Source: #Mets’ Harvey has partially torn UCL. Will be shut down. Determination on whether he needs Tommy John surgery will be made later. — Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) August 26, 2013 A couple of years ago, Stephen Strasburg was the best young pitcher we’d seen in a very long time, and […]

Game 132: Pirates 7 Brewers 1

Really, I'm not sure that I can pick my favorite moment from this game. Marlon Byrd's game-sealing three-run homer into centerfield bushes followed by a simultaneous Steve Blass and Twitter explosion of Byrd puns was pretty great, but all it really did was put the finishing touches on a game that had looked like a win for a while. For my money, I'm not sure I've ever...

Pirates Rumors: Pittsburgh eyeing Justin Morneau

Even after acquiring Marlon Byrd and John Buck, the Pittsburgh Pirates are still being active on the trade front. The Pirates are now trying to add arguably the best first baseman available. Jon Heyman of CBS is reporting that the Pirates "have their eyes on" Twins first baseman Justin Morneau. It was believed that Morneau was likely to stay put in Minnesota, but with...

Is the wind out of the Mets sail for good this year?

Are you excited for the final month of baseball, Mets’ fans? Clearly that’s a rhetorical question. With the Mets dropping six of their last seven games, the grittiness and fight that this team displayed shortly after the All-Star break, all but seems to have dissipated. The air has been let out of the balloon as far as this season goes. Obviously, it’s not just the mounting...

Matt den Dekker Will Be Center (Field) Of Attraction Today

Providing the weather clears, the New York Mets will run out another rookie this afternoon: lanky center fielder Matt den Dekker. This kid can fly and run down a ball in the gap with anybody the Mets have, but is a slow study at the plate. Den Dekker’s opportunity comes in the aftermath of the trade of Marlon Byrd to Pittsburgh. A capsule of den Dekker’s production was last...
