After Friday night’s game, Clint Hurdle announced that Kevin Correia will slide back in to the rotation and start on Tuesday against the Dodgers. The upcoming pitching lineup will look like this:

  • Saturday vs. SD: Burnett
  • Sunday vs. SD: Bedard
  • Monday vs. LA: Karstens
  • Tuesday vs. LA: Correia
  • Wednesday vs. LA: Rodriguez
  • Thursday vs. LA: McDonald

That’s a six-man rotation, at least for now. I don’t have a problem with putting Correia back into the mix, although I do wonder if Hurdle is simply giving in to Kevin after he expressed disappointment about going to the bullpen (he only pitched once out of the pen). I’d rather keep him in the bullpen, but he’s pitched well enough to earn another start and I can understand the desire to give everyone an extra day of rest.

The thing I don’t like about this, though, is how it pushes A.J. Burnett back an extra day. I don’t know if this six-man thing is going to be the plan going forward or if it’s just for another week, but I want Burnett to go every five games, no matter what. He’s a veteran that almost surely isn’t concerned about fatigue or an innings count, and we saw the Bucs benefit from sliding him up a day on Sunday to pitch against the Reds. Correia’s start earlier this week already gave him an extra day, so now he’ll be pitching on five days of rest instead of the normal four twice in a row.

Even if Hurdle/Huntington want to go with six in the rotation, Burnett should keep sliding up a spot to pitch as much as possible. That’s not going to happen this week, which is definitely a little frustrating–he’ll only pitch once during this ten game homestand. I’m fine with spotting him an extra day once in a while, but it shouldn’t be the policy for the rest of the year–that could cost him two or three starts, which could be crucial in a close division/wild-card race.
