In the first of a two game series, the Pittsburgh Pirates took Monday’s game over the Miami Marlins by a final score of 3-2.   The loss prevented the Marlins from reaching three games over .500, something they have yet to do this season.   This result also means Miami will be unable to win a fourth consecutive series as the best they can hope for now is a series split.

Anibal Sanchez was charged with the loss to fall to 2-1 but deserved a better fate after his seven inning effort.  While it was a shaky start at the beginning for Sanchez, he settled in while allowing three runs on five hits.    Most of that damage came in the first two innings but with a lack of offense behind him, the three runs proved to be too much.   Steve Cishek, Randy Choate and Ryan Webb combined for two scoreless innings of relief after Sanchez exited.

Hanley Ramirez hit his seventh home run of the year in the first inning, a bomb to left field that came the closest to hitting the windows in Marlins Park thus far.    Emilio Bonifacio would bring home another run with a hit in the fourth but the scoring on the day for Miami ended there.   With a delayed steal, Bonifacio also added his 18th swipe as he remained perfect on steal attempts this season.    After the game the Marlins optioned Kevin Mattison to New Orleans and are expected to recall Bryan Petersen on Tuesday.

Miami will look to split the series on Tuesday as Josh Johnson is scheduled to take on Kevin Correia.
