Found July 20, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
John Sickels says that Tyler Glasnow is among the best pitching prospects in baseball. John Sickels released his mid-season top 75 prospects this week. The Pittsburgh Pirates had four players on the list, with all four appearing in the top 50. Jameson Taillon, Gregory Polanco, Alen Hanson, and Tyler Glasnow all made the list. Taillon was first on the list, coming in at number 10. That is up from the pre-season ranking of 17. Sickels notes that his slot at number ten assumes that his July 13th start was an aberration. That ten run outing took Taillon’s ERA from a 2.98 to a 3.75. Polanco was next, rated 19th overall. Sickels had him 50th in the pre-season rankings, and said that he’s a believer in Polanco. Hanson was the third Pirates prospect on the list, coming in at number 42. That was up from the pre-season rank of 49, although Sickels said his stock stayed level. Glasnow hasn’t finished consistently inside the top 50, but has been in that range in a lot of rankings. Sickels had him 46th, after not having him in his pre-season top 150. He feels that Glasnow is among the best pitching prospects in baseball.

Thom Brennaman on Pirates pitcher: "This guy sucks"

Reds announcer and Fox play by play man Thom Brennaman got caught with a hot mic Sunday afternoon with Cincy hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates.  After Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke walked Reds SS Zack Cozart, you can hear Brennaman whisper "this guy sucks" into the microphone. One would have to presume Brennaman is not talking about Cozart, but Locke.  Perhaps that'...

Looking at the Pirates Starting Pitching Depth For the Rest of the Season

The first half of the season saw the Pittsburgh Pirates use 11 starting pitchers. The reason the number was so high was largely due to injuries. Out of the 11 pitchers who have made starts this year for the Pirates, 7 have missed time due to injuries. The guys who have stayed healthy are Jeff Locke (not counting his recent lower back tightness which caused him to miss his last start...

Locke, Pirates Eke Out 3-2 Win Over Reds to Avoid Sweep

Jeff Locke has reduced his season FIP from 4.47 to 3.77 over the last two months. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Jeff Locke does not suck. I wrote two months ago that Locke would not continue to dominate as he dominated the early part of the season. What he has done in those two months surprised me: he kept pitching to prevent runs. Locke’s winning performance in the Pirates’ 3...

Porn star Pirates fan prompts police probe into masked cop

Police in Pittsburgh have launched a probe into one of its officers after he posed for a picture with a porn star while wearing a unicorn's head. The incriminating photograph, posted on Twitter, shows the unidentified, rubber-masked officer posing playfully in the lobby of a police station next to laughing adult actress Andy San Dimas. The cop was caught in the compromising...

Pittsburgh Pirates salvage series finale against Reds

Jeff Locke Jeff Locke returned to the mound with a strong performance as he helped the Pittsburgh Pirates avoid a sweep with a 3-2 win against their division rival Cincinnati Reds on Sunday at Great American Ball Park. The Pirates offense has been less than sub par in recent weeks but they had just enough to fuel the fire and salvage a game from the Reds. Coming into Sunday’s...

Pirates Strand More Runners in 5-3 Loss to Reds

Russell Martin had two hits, including one of the solo homers, in the Pirates’ losing effort. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Losing in Cincinnati does not harm Pittsburgh’s playoff chances as much as one might think. The Reds and Pirates are still on a collision course for the NL Wild Card Playoff (43% chance this is the Coin Flip Game matchup), and even after a loss the Bucs are...

Pirates rumors: Pittsburgh targeting Alex Rios and Alexei Ramirez

The Pittsburgh Pirates don't just want to have their first season above .500 in 20 years; they also want to make a serious playoff run. Although they are just one game back of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central, given their recent history and the strength of the division, many still believe they'll finish third, behind the Cincinnati Reds. An offensive upgrade could...

Trade Values: Alexei Ramirez

Last night we heard that the Pittsburgh Pirates were looking at Alex Rios, and also might consider Alexei Ramirez. I’ve already done a Trade Values article on Rios. That article included a brief estimate of the value of Ramirez, although that came from just glancing at his stats and contracts, rather than digging in deep and looking at him closer. With last night’s rumor, I decided...

Reds 5, Pirates 4

Saturday’s loss undoubtedly ranks among the most frustrating of the year – possibly atop the list. In addition to the usual RISP failures (including a spectacularly awful display in the ninth inning), the pitching and defense was not up to snuff, and a few bad breaks really hurt them as well. It all ended in the second straight close, irritating loss to a rival on the road that...

Game 96: Pirates 3 Reds 2

It sure is nice to get the first win after the All-Star Break, isn't it?  The Pirates didn't really play all that badly on Friday or Saturday (at least, I didn't think so; they got slammed by bad inning from Liriano on Friday and were just one or two hits away on Saturday), but at this point in the season wins are wins and losses are losses. Garrett Jones gave the...
