Pirates Injury Updates: Marco Gonzales, Ryan Borucki and Others
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

OAKLAND — Pittsburgh Pirates Director of Sports Medicine and Todd Tomczyk gave updates on several injured players before media in Oakland prior to Wednesday’s series finale against the A’s.

Here’s what we found out.

MARCO GONZALES

Gonzales is currently on the 15-day injured list with a left forearm muscle strain.

“At this point, we’re still learning,” Tomczyk said. Tomczyk went onto say that Gonzales is still not throwing, but hoping to have answers “sooner rather than later.”

There is currently no timetable for Gonzales’ return.

RYAN BORUCKI

Borucki consulted with Dr. Steven Shin, Tomczyk said. The good news is that Borucki no longer has left triceps inflammation, per Tomczyk.

“As we learned and honed in on what was really going on with Ryan, the working diagnosis now is median nerve neuritis,” he said, “or just median nerve inflammation.” Tomczyk said Borucki is taking several weeks off in addition to his rehab, but the prognosis is overall “encouraging.” “As Ben (Cherington) alluded to on Sunday, that we anticipate Ryan pitching for the Pirates at some point this year.” Tomczyk said Borucki might have an additional months without throwing.

YASMANI GRANDAL

Tomczyk confirmed Grandal, who started the season on the IL, will be playing for the AAA Indianapolis Indians Thursday. He figures to be in Pittsburgh soon.

ENDY RODRIGUEZ

Rodriguez, underwent Tommy John over the winter and will miss all of 2024. Tomczyk said Rodriguez, a switch hitter, is still progressing, hitting from the left side.

JASON DELAY

Tomczyk said Delay is 11-12 days removed from surgery to repair a torn meniscus. He also said Delay is at the point where he can run on a sub-gravity treadmill without pain.

THOMAS HARRINGTON

Harrington had his shoulder examined during spring training. Tomczyk said he’s throwing up to three innings in a building at the Pirates spring training complex in Bradenton, Florida.
