The Pittsburgh Pirates aren't very good at winning game anymore, but their star player at least knows how to broker peace. The Pirates lost their fifth game in a row and for the 22nd time in their last 31 games Tuesday night, dropping a 5-3 decision at Cincinnati. Though the Pirates' freefall continues, they at least avoided a possibly ugly situation. Pirates rookie reliever Jared Hughes hit Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips with a pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning on Monday night, a game the Reds won 4-3 in 14 innings. Phillips flipped the ball back to the mound rather than the batboy, and Hughes took exception to it. Both teams got into a shouting match from their dugouts, though it did not escalate beyond that. Phillips then suggested on Twitter after the game that Hughes had made a racial remark. The tweet said: "#RealTalk... Not really surprised by what I heard come outta another player's mouth tonite but DAMN... Still PISSED bout that $...

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has accused an unidentified Pittsburgh Pirates player of making racist comments towards him during a game Monday.

Phillips, Hughes clear the air

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips says he's happy and ready to move on after talking to Pirates reliever Jared Hughes about a comment he thought he overheard. Hughes hit Phillips in the leg during Cincinnati's 4-3 win in 14 innings on Monday night. Phillips picked up the ball and tossed it toward the mound before heading to first base. Phillips thought he heard Hughes...

Report: Hughes defends himself against claim of racist comment

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Jared Hughes thought the issue of his alleged racial remark had been resolved when he had a telephone conversation with Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, but he felt a need to defend himself after hearing Phillips repeat his accusation on television, according to CBSSports.com. "I didn't say those things,'' Hughes told CBSSports...

McCutchen Showing Signs of Sparking on Offense

Despite the offensive struggles from the Pirates over the past several weeks, Andrew McCutchen looks like he’s getting back on track. And the team needs him to do so. Pittsburgh has lost 21 of their past 30 games, which includes a four game losing streak after Cincinnati walked off in extras on Monday night. But in that game, Andrew McCutchen finished 2-for-5 with a home run...

Reds' Phillips accuses foe of racial comment

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was angered by an alleged racial remark from an unnamed opponent during Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Phillips didn’t clarify who made the alleged comment or reveal the contents during the eight inning of the 14-inning game in Cincinnati. After the game, Phillips tweeted, “#RealTalk ... Not really surprised...

Brandon Phillips accuses Pirates of racism

This came to my attention this morning after reading a piece on Getting Blanked by Dustin Parkes, where he noted that Brandon Phillips of the Reds accused a mystery Pirate of racism during Monday's game between the two teams. After the game, Phillips tweeted this out: #RealTalk... Not really surprised by what I heard come outta another player's mouth tonite but...

Pirates Hughes denies using racial slur

Pirates rookie reliever Jared Hughes gained the nickname of "The Mayor" during his climb through the farm system because of his ability to make friends with seemingly everybody with his friendly and outgoing nature.

Pirates' Hughes issues statement denying Phillips' claim

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie reliever Jared Hughes gained the nickname of "The Mayor" during his climb through the farm system because of his ability to make friends with seemingly everybody with his friendly and outgoing nature. Now Hughes' integrity is being brought in question, including the idea that he is racist, because of an incident that occurred in Pirates&...

Pirates: Hughes made no racial comment

The Pittsburgh Pirates want to make it clear once and for all -- Pirates reliever Jared Hughes did not make a racial comment toward Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips. The issue flared anew Wednesday after Phillips and Hughes seemingly had made peace during a cell-phone conversation that took place after Phillips said an unnamed Pirates player had said something racist...

Brandon Phillips says there is no issue with Jared Hughes

A day after furiously writing on Twitter that a Pirates player had said something racist to him during Monday’s game, Brandon Phillips proclaimed that he had no issue with Jared Hughes and that the two had sorted out matters. Hughes hit Phillips with a pitch in the eighth inning of Monday’s game, and the two appeared to exchange words as Phillips headed to first. According...

Phillips Leads Reds to 10.5G Lead

The Cincinnati Reds took another game from the Pirates last night in a 5-3 win at Great American Ball Park. Brandon Phillips led the way with a home run and two RBI while continuing his stellar play in the field. Trade deadline pickup Jonathan Broxton recorded the save instead of normal closer Aroldis Chapman who will miss some games to address fatigue issues in this pitching arm.

Reds 2b Brandon Phillips made the best flip to first to get a Pirate out you'll see this year

After cutting off the throw home, Cincinnati Reds Joey Votto makes a great flip to Brandon Phillips to catch Pittsburgh Pirats runner Brock Holt at first base. Your browser does not support... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~ http://www.bobsblitz.com

Free fall reaches five

The Pirates fell again Tuesday night, this time in a more non-descript fashion…but still close enough to be frustrating. A couple mistakes in the field did them in as the Reds prevailed 5-3. Kevin Correia wasn’t too bad, although he allowed a homer to Brandon Phillips on a total meatball for the first pitch of the game. The Phillips homer tied the game at one, since Alex Presley...

Actually, I'm not sure I do want to talk about it

Last week, on Tuesday morning, my dad and I drove to the airport talking about the Pirates/Astros debacle we'd witnessed at PNC Park on Labor Day afternoon. My dad had a simple question for me: "Why do you think this has happened two years in a row? Why have they gotten most of the way through a good season and collapsed twice now?"I hedged. I said that I didn't...

Game 142: Pirates 3, Reds 4

“I stunk,” [Ludwick] said. “I stunk the entire game. I felt like I had a thousand chances to win the game. I finally did it on 1,001st. Every time I got up, there were runners in scoring position and less than two outs. I stunk. I’m glad I got the job done in the 14th.”That was a very, very long game. In a game that took 5 hours and 22 minutes to play, the Cincinnati Reds...
