Deadspin comes through with some incredible story of a journeyman, low-level wannabe baseball player who scammed some Australian league into buying Pirates outfielder Xavier Paul. In turn, the con man secured what he wanted, a baseball contract for himself. The story is here. Guaranteed Xavier Paul was pretty shocked to find this information out. Probably as shocked as I was when I found out Australia has a baseball league. I thought it was all Mel Gibson drunkenly boxing kangaroos. See, I'm racist. Er...country-ist? PS that pic is actually a young Xavier Paul. It came from the PG+ website but I don't subscribe to paywalls so this is all the info I can pass along. Go Buccos.

What is Alex Presley’s Trade Value?

When talking about the outfield depth that the Pittsburgh Pirates have, a lot of assumptions are made.  In the minors we assume that Starling Marte and Robbie Grossman will both arrive in the next year or two, while meeting their expectations.  Or, more conservatively, we expect just one of them to pan out.  In the majors we expect an outfield of Andrew McCutchen, Jose Tabata...

Pirates outfielder Xavier Paul has become caught in the middle of an identity hoax that had officials with the Australian Baseball League expecting Paul's arrival at the start of their season, which began earlier this month.

Xavier Paul, who was recently caught up in an identity hoax involving the Australian Baseball League and a former Minor Leaguer, does not plan to pursue legal action.

Katt Williams Near A Pittsburgh Pirates Jacket

You guys know how much I love this little pimp's comedy. Katt Williams is always awesome. TMZ has a story that he was questioned in a theft at Best Buy. He wasn't at fault, but someone in his crew was cited for a minor misdemeanor. And that isn't even the real story. The big thing is TMZ used a pic of Katt where there's clearly a dude in a Pittsburgh Pirates jacket...

Huntington On Rod Barajas, Ronny Cedeno

The Pirates provided fans around baseball with some midseason excitement before fading in August and September and finishing with a 72-90 mark. GM Neal Huntington knows the next step is sustaining success into September and beyond, but getting there is a definite challenge. Here are some updates on Huntington’s Pirates from the Milwaukee GM Meetings... The Pirates moved quickly...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Barajas Over Doumit Big Mistake

The Pirates’ curious decision to forego 2 reasonably-priced option years for catcher Ryan Doumit was compounded last week Image credit gearupforsports when the club signed backstop Rod Barajas to a 1-year $4,000,000 contract, with a 2013 club option for $3,500,000.  Barajas is inferior to Doumit in almost every aspect.  Consider the following: 1.  Age- Doumit will be 31...

Hanrahan open to idea of contract extension

With the recent ballooning of contracts for closers, and Pittsburgh's own Joel Hanrahan sitting only two years away from free agency, two interesting questions emerge.

This Date in Pirates History: November 15

Born on this date in 1928 was Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder Gus Bell, who played for them from 1950-52. Gus was signed as an amateur free agent in 1947 and by age 20 he already had two .300 seasons in the minors. He started the 1950 season in AAA playing for Indianapolis and played so well the first 38 games, hitting an even .400 (66 for 165), that the Pirates called him up on...

New Site Commenting Policy

I haven’t done much research in to the makeup of the audience that reads Pirates Prospects, but I can safely assume one thing: the vast majority of readers are adults.  Over the last week I’ve been working on a commenting policy to establish some guidelines for what is unacceptable in the comments section of the site.  The commenting policy has been launched today, and while...

News and notes: Astros officially moving to AL West

Astros owner Drayton McLane confirmed yesterday that the team will be moving to the American League West after the 2012 season. The move, for whatever reason, is part of the team’s sale (from McLane to Jim Crane, taking place today). I know the Astros are awful right now, but this is a good thing for the Pirates.  The move will finally even out all the divisions in baseball ...
