The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired outfielder Jaff Decker and right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Alex Dickerson.
Decker hit .286 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 105 games with Triple-A Tucson in 2013. He also went 4 for 26 with a homer and two RBI in 13 games with the Padres. Mikolas went 4-2 with 26 saves for Tucson this year and made two scoreless appearances for San Diego.
Dickerson was selected the Eastern League Rookie of the Year after hitting .288 with 17 home runs and 68 RBIs with Double-A Altoona.
To make room for Decker and Mikolas on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated first baseman/outfielder Garrett Jones and right-handed pitcher Kyle McPherson for assignment.

I’ve never had any interaction with Tim Williams of Pirates Prospects, aside from him passive-aggressively claiming that “nobody reads” isportsweb after I questioned the accuracy of an article from one of his contributors on Twitter. And to Tim’s credit, he runs a regularly updated Pirates page with some useful player information, podcasts and interviews featuring personnel...
The Padres continued their flurry of roster moves on Monday as it was announced that two deals had been made with the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates. Relief pitcher Brad Brach was traded to Baltimore in exchange for Minor-Leaguer Devin Jones, and reliever Miles Mikolas and outfielder Jaff Decker were traded to Pittsburgh in exchange for 1B/OF prospect Alex Dickerson. The Pittsburgh Pirates made a few roster moves Monday, but one of them popped out at me, Garrett Jones who was designated for assignment.
Jones, 32, was eligible for arbitration for the third time and would have received a raise from his $4.5 million salary in 2013. Incidentally, about $500K more than what the Mets’ Ike Davis was making.

The Pittsburgh Pirates designated 1B/OF Garrett Jones for assignment on Monday morning to make room for minor league outfielder Jaff Decker, according to CBS Sports.
Jones, 32, should be in high demand this winter. Despite hitting .233/.289/.419 in 2013, the left-handed power hitter is only one year removed from an impressive .274/.317/.516 line that was a staple in the middle of...
In a Saturday morning article, Time for the Padres to get bold, the U-T San Diego’s Matt Calkins advocated surrendering the farm system’s pitching depth for an impact bat. Calkins’ suggestions centered around the addition of either Giancarlo Stanton or Mark Trumbo, “the Angel with a lifetime OPS of .768 over four seasons.”
These players have been mentioned before during...
The Orioles have acquired right-handed reliever Brad Brach from the San Diego Padres for a minor league pitcher.

Yesterday I gave some thoughts on the Padres’ farm system. These thoughts were not unique. In fact, the ideas I discussed have become recognized as very basic tenets of operating a baseball team today.
I wanted to follow up on what I wrote with some material that reinforces the idea of patience and not giving away the farm as part of a quick fix. Additionally, I would like to share...
