Pittsburgh Pirates president Frank Coonelly believes his club can take another step toward contending this season, and not just because the rest of the NL Central appears to have taken a step back. While the top teams in the division underwent major overhauls on the field and in the front office during the offseason - or both - the Pirates were relatively quiet during the winter. The team added veteran infielder Clint Barmes, pitcher Erik Bedard, catcher Rod Barajas and outfielder Nate McLouth in free agency and traded for third baseman Casey McGehee before making inroads on a possible trade for New York Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett this week. Coonelly thinks the veterans will fill in the edges around the core of Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker, Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez and will help Pittsburgh make a run at ending a run of 19 straight losing seasons.

Pirates win arbitration case against Garrett Jones; agree with Casey McGehee

Garrett Jones and the Pirates went to arbitration yesterday to determine if he would make $2.25 million or $2.5 million this season. Today, arbitration was ruled in favor of the Pirates and Jones will make $2.25 million. It’s pretty amazing that they couldn’t settle with the two sides being so close, but hey, I guess it saves $250,000. After the Jones ruling, the Pirates...

This Date in Pirates History: February 17

On this date in 1912 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded outfielder Vin Campbell to the Boston Braves for outfielder Mike Donlin. Both players were great hitters but neither were loyal to baseball. Campbell was a businessman, Donlin a vaudeville actor and both would leave baseball for periods of time, or hold out for more money, because they knew they could make better money elsewhere...

Pirates win arbitration case with Garrett Jones, settle with Casey McGehee

Via the Pirates Twitter and Rob Biertempfel, the Bucs won their arbitration case against Garrett Jones today (they were at $2.25 million, Jones was at $2.5 million) while settling with Casey McGehee at $2.5375 million, which means they have everyone under contract in advance of pitcher's and catcher's reporting. There was some rumbling online yesterday about the Pirates&...

MLB Opinion: Pirates Make Mistake with Burnett Deal

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a mistake trading for enigmatic right hander A.J. Burnett and committing $13 million in salary to him over two seasons. While the Bucco’s didn’t give much up in the two prospects that they sent to New York, it still seems like too big of a financial risk for a guy that you just do not know what to expect from. The 35 year old has not had a...

Ohlendorf signs with Red Sox

Right-hander Ross Ohlendorf made just nine starts with Pittsburgh in 2011. PITTSBURGH — Right-hander Ross Ohlendorf signed with the Boston Red Sox today, according to Scott Bradley (via Peter Gammons). The deal is reported to be a minor league contract. Ohlendorf was released by the Pirates in December after an injury plagued 2011 season. The move was to open up a roster spot...

Tim Wakefield and Former Pirates Pitchers

With Tim Wakefield announcing his retirement I thought I’d go through the unfortunate list for Pirates fans, of pitchers with the most wins after leaving the Pittsburgh Pirates, just to show where he ranks on that list. I included 11 players just to show the top 10 while he was with the Pirates, as all the other players on the list were retired prior to him leaving Pittsburgh...

Pirates Beat Jones Into Oblivion, Settle With McGehee

The Pittsburgh Pirates have won their arbitration case against 1B Garrett Jones, saving the team a whopping $225,000 bucks.  Somehow the two sides were not able to bridge that insurmountable gap and the Pirates were able to convince an arbitrator that Jones sucks slightly less than he thinks he does. I’m not sure why the [...]

Pirates 2012 ... Position Battles

First base After Derrek Lee opted for free agency, the Pirates appeared resolved to platoon the position internally.

Pedro Alvarez and Pirate's starting rotation would seem to be most critical to 2012

BRADENTON, Fla. Neil Walker had a bird's-eye view. Walker played in 159 games last year, meaning he participated in the middling early portion of the season, the improvement in June, the division-leading play in July, the 10-game losing streak that began in August and the struggle to the finish line in September.
