The Pirates filled up their 40-man roster tonight by adding Matt Hague, Starling Marte, Jordy Mercer, Rudy Owens, Duke Welker & Justin Wilson. To make room, they designated Xavier Paul and Eric Fryer for assignment.
None of the additions are surprises at all – I’d say pretty much all of them were locks, minus maybe Welker. Those added are now safe from being plucked by another team in the Rule 5 Draft this winter. The most notable prospects left unprotected are Aaron Pribanic, Michael Colla, Quincy Latimore, Tim Alderson, Brett Lorin, and Diego Moreno. Tim has the full list and some additional analysis here.
Paul’s designation is not a surprise. Fryer’s is…I would prefer keeping him over the newly acquired Brian Jeroloman. I can’t say I really understand the logic there, but they are two fringe catcher that I’ve barely seen (Fryer) and never seen (Jeroloman), so I won’t fuss about it. There’s still a chance Fryer will remain with the Pirates in the minor leagues.

Matt Hague went 1-3 with a single, walk and a strikeout. He is now hitting .309 although he also committed his 8th error of the season. Pedro Ciriaco played left field and went 2-3 with two singles. He was replaced on defense in the 9th inning.

Bucs claim two off waivers, outright Pagnozzi
The Pirates made two pretty head-scratching waiver claims today, adding pitcher Jeremy Hefner from San Diego and catcher Brian Jeroloman from Toronto. They also outrighted catcher Matt Pagnozzi (who they added late in the season for extra depth) to Indy – he can become a minor league free agent or accept a minor league offer from the Pirates.
Hefner is 25 and was the Padres’...
This Date in Pirates History: November 18
On this date in 1998 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded pitcher Ricardo Rincon to the Cleveland Indians for outfielder Brian Giles. The trade was a one-sided win for the Pirates as Giles was an all-star outfielder and Rincon was a lefty reliever, who pitched 207 games for the Indians but only amassed 154.1 innings over four seasons and his last two years there his ERA was well over 4...
Pirates shake up roster in advance of Rule 5 Draft
The Pirates waited until pretty late last night to announce all of the roster moves they made in advance of the Rule 5 Draft, but the news finally did get out. They started early in the day by claiming Brian Jeroloman and Jeremy Hefner off of waivers and outrighting Matt Pagnozzi to the minors. Jeroloman, from the Blue Jays system, doesn't appear to hit much, but he's got...
This Date in Pirates History: November 20
On this date in 1962 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded first baseman Dick Stuart and pitcher Jack Lamabe to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for pitcher Don Schwall and catcher Jim Pagliaroni. Stuart was covered in the November 7th article here. He played five seasons in Pittsburgh with a .273 average and 117 homers. He had a great 1961 season, hitting .301 with 35 homers and 117 RBI...
Doumit Signs With Minnesota
This afternoon, Ryan Doumit – part of my Off-season Plan B – signed a one year, $3 million deal with the Twins. First off, I wouldn’t suggest losing much sleep over this, as Doumit was more of an example of a low cost, average-to-just-above average hitter who could bat from the left side and share some time at 1B/LF/DH with Smoak, Carp, and Wells. It’s not that Doumit is...

Ryan Doumit a Twin!!!
This is a signing I like from the Twins. They get a legit backup catcher to play behind Mauer who I wont have a problem seeing play a good amount of time if Mauer cant handle the beating behind the plate. He is a solid hitter in the last 4 years he seems to either hit in the .250's or he is in the low .300's. He isnt a big power hitter but has hit double digits 3 of the last...
125th anniversary: Pirates join the NL
Today marks a big anniversary for the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was 125 years ago today, on Nov. 18, 1886, that they entered the National League, where they have been ever since. This move would be a turning point not just for Pittsburgh, but for the National League itself.
(Well, if you want to get technical, they were the Pittsburgh Alleghenays back then, but nickname change...
