According to the Pittsburgh Pirates Twitter feed, the Pirates have asked for release waivers on RHP Rick VandenHurk, so he will be allowed to sign with a foreign club. With the move, the 40-man roster now sits at 39 players. That doesn’t include Francisco Liriano, who has yet to officially sign. VandenHurk went 13-5, 2.92 in 21 appearances for Indianapolis last season, 19 as a starter. He also made four appearances for the Pirates in September/October, allowing four runs over 2.2 innings.   The @pirates have asked for release waivers on Rick van den Hurk for the purpose of allowing him to sign with a foreign club. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) January 6, 2013

Winter Leagues Recap: Marte Returns For Playoffs

In Winter League action from the Dominican last night, Starling Marte returned to his Leones del Escogido team and went 1-for-3, with two walks and a solo homer. With his team holding on to a 3-2 edge, he led off the eighth inning with his home run. Marte hadn’t played since December 8th, finishing the DWL regular season with a .304 average and .845 OPS in 28 games. He batted third...

The Pittsburgh Pirates created a vacancy in West Virginia when they promoted 2012 manager Rick Sofield to the majors. Sofield will take over as the first base coach for the Pirates in 2013, while leaving West Virginia looking for a manager. Chuck McGill of the Charleston Daily Mail reports that the new manager in West Virginia will be Mike Ryan. Ryan spent parts of five seasons in...

The Blue Jays have claimed pitcher Chad Beck off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, bringing the right-hander back to Toronto. The 27-year-old Beck returns to Toronto after being claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of last season. He appeared in 14 games for the Blue Jays in 2012, posting a 6.32 earned-run average. Player Profile #179: Garrett Jones | 1B, OF | PIT

Believe it or not, but the Pittsburgh Pirates have the makings of a pretty good lineup and Garrett Jones is a big part of that. He’s not a great batter who you can count on to deliver when your team needs it most, but once October rolls around you seem to find yourself saying, “Hmm, I don’t remember Jones being that good.” Last year Jones turned what had always been his Achilles’...

First Pitch: The Five Players That Represent a Microcosm of Neal Huntington’s Abilities

At the end of the 2012 season I wrote that 2013 was the make or break year for Neal Huntington and the current management group. When the group arrived in the 2007-08 off-season, the system was a wreck. There were hardly any prospects in the system, and very few players at the major league level who could be dealt for good returns. The guy with the biggest trade value at the time...

Chad Beck Claimed off Waivers by Toronto

Last week the Pittsburgh Pirates designated Chad Beck for assignment to create space for the new additions in the Joel Hanrahan trade. Today the Pirates announced that Beck has been claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto designated him for assignment earlier in the off-season, only for the Pirates to claim him. This is the second year in a row this has happened with...

A Jerry Sands Sterling RC Printing Plate.

Though he's been gone from the Dodgers for some months and has even been traded again - this time to the Pirates - Jerry Sands is still a guy I enjoy collecting. I like his skill set and feel the Dodgers never gave him enough of a chance. That adds up to a tertiary collection and I was recently able to add my first Jerry 1/1.This sweet 2010 Bowman Sterling RC Magenta Printing...

Winter Leagues Recap: Johnson Continues Strong Winter

In Dominican League playoff action from last night, Kris Johnson regained his form, rebounding from a poor start earlier in the week, to allow just on run over seven innings in his team’s 3-2 win. Johnson gave up five hits, one walk and he struck out six, with the only run he allowed coming in the seventh inning on a walk and a triple. In seven of his eight Winter League starts...

News and notes

The first week of 2013 was a pretty slow one in terms of Pirates news, but here’s a quick roundup: As you’ve surely seen far too many times by now on Twitter or Facebook, Andrew McCutchen is in the running to be on the cover of MLB 13 The Show. You can vote for him by tweeting with the hashtag MLB13Cutch or by clicking here and using Facebook. Remember Francisco Liriano? The...
