FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Andrew McCutchen was more than glad to share Thursday. McCutchen doubled and scored three times, and the Pittsburgh Pirates used 10-run barrage in the first inning to batter the Minnesota Twins 17-6. Garrett Jones and Alex Presley each homered, doubled and singled. The Pirates finished with 19 hits, 10 for extra bases. "We brought the lumber today. That was pretty much it," McCutchen said. "We swung it. That's about all that went into it. People start hitting, and next thing you know, it's just a domino effect." Matt Hague homered and had three hits for the Pirates. Jones drove in four runs. "I think a lot of guys have matured as hitters and learned from last year, made improvements and adjustments to make us better," Jones said. "We have the talent to hit well and to be a great team. It's just a matter of putting it all together and doing it during the games." The numbers were more than encourag...

MLB 2012 Preview: Pittsburgh Pirates

In 2007 the Pittsburgh Pirates were what the Houston Astros are today. In 2012, they’re in a better place and there’s growing optimism in Pittsburgh. All one has to do is look at the deal they made last week with Andrew McCutchen. At six years, $51 million that may seem like a lot to the ordinary citizen (and you’re not wrong), but in baseball terms this could be as big a...

Pirates 11, Orioles 5

Good win for the Bucs today. At the plate:  Alex Presley, Neil Walker, Garrett Jones, and Josh Harrison had two hits each. One of Harrison’s hits was a triple. He’s hitting .600 (6 for 10) this spring. Pedro Alvarez was 1 for 2 with a walk, strikeout, and sharply hit sacrifice fly. On the mound: James McDonald had a very rough outing, allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. He struggled...

Spring Training: The Phils’ late rally comes up short as they lose to the Pirates, 3-2.

A late ninth-inning rally by the Phils comes up a run short as they lose to the Pirates, 3-2. The Pirates take a quick 1-0 lead in the first as Starling Marte hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the spring. The Pirates then took a 2-0 lead in the third as, with two men on, and with one man out, Casey McGehee hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, scoring Marte, who had earlier...

On the mound:  Jo-Jo Reyes got the easy win with the enormous...

Erik Bedard: 2011 Fantasy Baseball Sleeper

Author: Andrew SwansonOne key to winning a fantasy baseball league is finding value in the latter stages of the draft, especially starting pitchers who can provide help with wins and strikeouts without hurting a team’s overall ERA. Late round value picks who pan-out can also be excellent trade bait to help bolster other weak areas of a fantasy roster. After spending all of 2010...

Pirates crush Twins 17-6

Final: Pirates 17, Twins 6 WP: Jo-Jo Reyes (2-1, 9.00 ERA) LP: Terry Doyle (0-1, 16.88 ERA) Alex Presley went 3 for 4 with a double and a home run. He’s tearing the cover off the ball this spring. Fantasy Forecast: Pittsburgh Pirates

Author: Andrew SwansonThis winter is going to be long and hard for Pennsylvania sports fans, as the Steelers ended a promising season with a Super Bowl loss to Green Bay and the Pirates begin what will likely be a record setting 19th straight losing season. Pirate fans are nothing if not loyal. Perhaps hopelessly loyal of a team that has struggled to win since the days of Andy Van...

Versatile Harrison hopes to stick with Bucs

Yamaico Navarro and Josh Harrison battling over the backup shortstop spot is the only real position battle going on in Pirates spring training. Harrison has played just one game of shortstop in his professional career, but after a crash course sees the versatility as a big plus.

Pirates 3, Phillies 2

Another win for the Bucs today. At the plate: Starling Marte continues to be a beast. He had two hits off Cliff Lee, including a homer. Jake Fox also homered off Lee. On the mound:  Kevin Correia continued his strong spring, going four scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk, and struck out two. Evan Meek, Justin Wilson, Kyle McPherson, and Daniel Moskos all pitched...
