Found November 01, 2011 on Pirates Prospects:
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed right handed reliever Tim Wood to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, per a team press release.  Wood played in the Pirates’ organization in 2011, including throwing eight innings in the majors.    In his time in AAA he put up some impressive numbers, with a 2.84 ERA in 44.1 innings, along with a 32:12 K/BB ratio.  He’s yet to make the successful jump to the majors, with a career 4.50 ERA in 58 innings, along with a 4.3 K/9 and a 5.1 BB/9.  However, his arm is intriguing, with a fastball that sat in the upper 90s in AAA last year, and a hard slider that was in the high 80s/low 90s. Wood was traded in August to the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations.  He made four appearances with Round Rock, the Rangers’ AAA affiliate.

Internal Options For the 2012 Season

Following the announcements yesterday that the Pittsburgh Pirates had turned down all four player options, Pirates fans began to panic.  The panic was the same thing we see at the beginning of every off-season: the worry that the Pirates wouldn’t add anyone over the next five months, and would enter the 2012 season with the options available in the system. It’s far too early...

Pirates decline options for Cedeno, Maholm Doumit, Snyder

We knew that Paul Maholm, Ryan Doumit, and Chris Snyder were likely gone…but Ronny Cedeno too? That one is a surprise…and to me, a disappointment. I sure hope Neal Huntington isn’t planning on heading in to 2012 with Chase d’Arnaud as the starting shortstop. He’s got a lot of work to do this winter. ©2011 Raise the Jolly Roger. Making the Pirates better: Shortstop

You know what? I'm tired of being negative about this off-season. I still don't think that things are going to play out terribly well for the Pirates this winter, but I also don't think I've done a good job of making it clear that I don't think the Pirates are breaking up the 1927 Yankees again. Ronny Cedeno and Ryan Doumit and Paul Maholm and Garrett Jones (should...

When It Makes Sense to Give Up a Draft Pick

In 2010 the Pittsburgh Pirates had the 52nd pick in the draft, picking second overall in the second round.  Heading in to the draft, not much was expected from the pick.  They ended up drafting and signing Stetson Allie, who entered the draft as a top 10-15 prospect. In 2011 the Pirates had the 61st overall pick in the draft, picking first in the second round.  Once again, not...

The Pirates' Ralph Kiner Had A Wheaties Commercial In The 1950s That Sucked

Before I begin: Wheaties suck. Above is Michael Fitzmaurice, who from all I can tell as a lifelong Pirates fan, was never a Pirates announcer. He was a radio actor and was the voice of Superman. But Wheaties makes awful cereal and is a liar. This old 1950s television commercial for Wheaties features Fitzmaurice in unmistakable 50s-era radio and television ad style of shilling...

Wilson says 'great chance' he's back with Rangers

Free agent lefthander C.J. Wilson said that there's a "great chance" he returns to the Texas Rangers. "I like it here and I've won here," Wilson told "I've proved that I can be a good pitcher here." Wilson has helped the Rangers reach the World Series each of the last two seasons and should garner plenty of interest...

Pitching No. 1 priority as Rangers prep for 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The calendar still has 2011 on it but Texas general manager Jon Daniels is already on 2012 time. Daniels met with the media Monday and said the best way to get rid of the bitter taste left by the World Series loss to St. Louis is to win the championship next year. Step one towards that goal will be to bolster the pitching staff in the offseason. "Pitching...

C.J. Wilson: "Great Chance" Of Staying With Rangers

C.J. Wilson is currently the best pitcher on the free agent market, and he could probably use a break after making 39 starts this year.  Paul Salfen of Scoreboard Daily caught up with Wilson on Saturday; here are some highlights. Asked the chances he'll be back with the Rangers next year, Wilson replied, "Yeah, there’s a great chance because I like it here and I’ve...

Rangers Winterball Roundup - 10/30

Right-hander Tanner Scheppers has struggled with his control so far in Venezuela, but he recorded a perfect inning with two strikeouts on Sunday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Rangers lose reliever O'Day to Orioles

The Texas Rangers lost right-handerd relief pitcherDarren O'Day to the Baltimore Orioles on a waiver claim Wednesday. The Orioles have added O'Day to their major-league roster. O'Day struggled with injuries and inconsistency in 2011 for the Rangers, as hip surgery limited him to 16 games with the team. He missed more than two months in May and June after having surgeryto...

Kind of Moving

Right now I am working on moving posts to The Pittsburgh Sports Tavern.  More info to come as details are worked out.  I plan on double posting initially with a link to the The Tavern for comments and discussion. Like I said, details are being worked out.  Eventually I plan on redirecting traffic to the Tavern for the BTW address.  If everything works as planned, you'll...

It Would Suck To Wake Up This Morning and Be A……. Texas Sports Fan

Texas is a big state so there needs to be some clarification with being a “Texas Sports Fan”. Let’s just say that about 90% of Texas sports fans are included in this miserable Monday. The Houston Texans and University of Texas fans get a free pass on this one. Everybody else… All aboard this sh$tty, miserable Monday morning train after a total disaster sports weekend…...
