PLAYERS: AJ Burnett
TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates

Last month I made a post with a comparison of all the Pirates starting pitchers' 2011 pitch F/X. Now that we've added A.J. Burnett I figured I'd update the charts. Here's the data:Burnett is the only guy that's going to be throwing any thing close to a knucklecurveball this year, so you can't really compare him to the others guys too well. He throws harder than everyone else and gets a lot more whiffs than everyone else (which isn't represented in this data). He is a pure strikeout pitcher, which the Pirates have not had in a long time. It should fun to watch him work this year. If he can limit the home runs and take advantage of the league change, he could be a very exciting pitcher.

Getting traded by the Yankees might have been the best thing to ever happen to A.J. Burnett

For almost any player, getting traded from the mighty New York Yankees to the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates seems like a cruel and unusual fate. That fate is exactly what befell A.J. Burnett this past weekend as the Yankees were so eager to rid themselves of him, that they paid the Pirates to take them off their hands. In many ways, it is the low point of Burnett's career, but it...

AJ Burnett Happy To Escape New York

A.J. sure sounds happy to be out of New York. “It was fun the first couple of years. Then it got like, I’m never going to get out of this funk,” he said Monday, a day after the Yankees sent him to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a pair of low-level prospects who may never even smell the majors. After signing an $82.5 million, five-year contract on December 18, 2008, Burnett helped...

Pirates starting pitcher Burnett embraces latest major-league challenge

The Pirates are hoping that right-hander A.J. Burnett's veteran knowledge will be able to benefit the rest of the pitching staff.

A.J. puts blame on Pinstripe tinkerers

BRADENTON, Fla. — No more excuses for A.J. Burnett and no more Yankee thoughts. Burnett the Pirate took some blame for his failures with the Yankees yesterday at Pirate City, but also said he may have let too many people in pinstripes mess with his mechanics. “Without getting too far...

New Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett: 'It's going to be a fresh start'

About a dozen reporters gathered to talk to Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett this morning at Pirate City. Three years ago, when Burnett signed as s free agent with the New York Yankees, the horde was at least three times larger.

Day Two of Spring Training

Good morning from Pirate City. I’ll be updating this blog throughout the day with news and notes, but be sure to check the main site for the full stories. — Earlier this morning, the Pirates placed infielder Gustavo Nunez on the 60-day disabled list with a right ankle injury. The move opened up a spot on the 40-man for right-hander A.J. Burnett. — And speaking of...

A.J.‘s curve: missing bats, missing the zone

After much anticipation, the trade that sent A.J. Burnett from the Yankees to the Pirates was finally completed on Sunday. Burnett had a tumultuous three seasons in the Bronx, with a 4.79 ERA and 4.5 walks/hit batters per nine over 584 regular-season innings. His signature pitch is an 83 mph spike-curveball with exceptional movement. (Harry Pavlidis mentioned it here a few weeks...

Kendrick 2 Year Deal & Blanton-Abreu-Burnett Swap

KK Deal:2 years $7.5M to a 6th starter/bullpen longman. I'm confused, but that's exactly what Amaro doled out for Kyle Kendrick. KK was set to make $3.585 this season, and under the new contract his 2012 salary is yet to be announced. I like KK and think he has value, but there's a point when salary outweighs usefulness. However, with Cole Hamels and Joe Blanton both...

Burnett gets support from former batterymate

If Russell Martin truly intends to lay one down on "my boy," A.J. Burnett, the Yankees catcher had better already be practicing his bunting.

News and notes

Camp is now in full swing down in Bradenton. While it’s certainly great to have news tidbits, pictures, and videos flowing in…there’s honestly not a whole lot to talk about yet. You should all be following Bill Brink, Michael Sanserino, Rob Biertempfel, Tom Singer, and Kristy Robinson to make sure you don’t miss any of those news bits, because I’m not...
