Need a distraction from today’s nauseating Hall of Fame discussions? Welp, here ya go: Cleveland has traded RHP Jeanmar Gomez to Pittsburgh for minor league OF Quincy Latimore — keithlaw (@keithlaw) January 9, 2013 Gomez is a big leaguer, but not a very good one. He’s 24 years old and has 206 career innings under his belt, but his ERA is above 5.18 (5.96 last year), and he doesn’t strike very many batters out (4.9 per 9 innings). Those numbers are fairly consistent (and don’t appear to be “unlucky”) over his three partial seasons with the Indians, and he doesn’t throw very hard (90 MPH fastball). The only positive I can spot is a good ground ball rate (nearly 50%), plus the fact that he broke in tot he bigs at age 22. As for Latimore, he’s a 23-year-old outfielder who has been slowly moving through the system since 2007. He hit .252/.321/.433 with 15 homers in Altoona this year, and his numbers have been fairly close to that for most of his career. He’s not considered to be anywhere near the top of the Pirates system. This looks like a pretty unconsequential trade that won’t make much of an impact for either side.  That said, Gomez made 17 starts for Cleveland this year and 38 over three seasons, so I suppose he could enter the mix for a fifth starter job. I’m hoping this is just a depth move and not a panic/replacement after yesterday’s Francisco Liriano news. There’s nothing wrong with grabbing a guy like this that can come up from AAA and start a few games if needed, but if the Bucs are planning on slotting Gomez into the rotation, that’s not good.
