Today, it was announced that the Pirates and Red Sox had, indeed finalized a deal that sends RHP Joel Hanrahan and 2B Brock Holt to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for RHP Mark Melancon, OF/1B Jerry Sands, 2B Ivan De Jesus, and RHP Stolmy Pimentel. Hanrahan, 31, was acquired by Pittsburgh in 2009 from the Washington Nationals and served as the team’s closer the past two seasons. The two-time All-Star converted 76 of 84 save opportunities during that span. Hanrahan is set to earn around $7 million this season in his final year of arbitration. Holt, 24, was the Pirates’ 9th round pick in 2009 and made his ML debut last season. Over 72 plate appearances, Holt posted a line of .292/.329/.354. He owns a career .317 batting average over four minor league seasons. Melancon, 27, served as the Houston Astros closer during 2011, converting 20 of 25 save opportunities before being traded to Boston last year. He laid an egg last year with a 6.20 ERA with the Red Sox. Sands, 25, is a power...

I am a die hard pirate fan and want to thank J Hanrahan in that he gave it all for the pirates. He was more than just a great athlete he was the Rick Vaughn aka wild thing you new in the ninth inning he owned it. He would come in in ninth and face the 3,4,5 hitter and they would swing and occasionly get the bat on the ball but could not center him up and then if they were looking for a pitch they would get the heat and just lock them up. Strike three! Last year he struggled a bit with walks but he might walk two but strike out the side for another save. He is the definition of a closer.
    B. Holt has hit at every level he has played and when he gets on at MLB level you will have your replacement for Pedroia.
Trades are made to help both teams and I hope the Pirates got 4 gems as well, I fill that if you said I dont want these guys we could nix deal and trade would voided and I would still be alright. Redsox spend more because bigger market but this deal looks good for Pirates as well because of inclusion of M Melecon and Sands which would have been buried in organisational depth on your roster and N. Huntington has been trying to get Pimental since J. Bay trade and Ivan DeJesus J.R. has the right breeding and will fit the time zone of young arms in farm system Cole ,Tallion,Heredia.
Redsox fans give Hanrahan a chance and you won't be sorry and don't be so hard on Ben Cherington if things don't work you can still flip him to a team thats a contender at the trade deadline and get back any prospects you lost to us.

Hanrahan and Holt are always welcome in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
