Rob Biertempfel tweeted this afternoon that the Pirates will non-tender Jeff Karstens at tonight's midnight deadline. There's no word yet on any of the Pirates' other arbitration-eligible players, but Karstens was probably the most important player on the brink (Charlie Morton may get non-tendered, but that's probably more health-related than money related and I could see him back either way, Chris Resop is Chris Resop, and everyone else will likely be tendered) and so he's the one that's worth talking about.  Jeff Karstens is a pretty unexceptional pitcher in a lot of ways. He doesn't throw hard or strike a ton of people out, but he he changes speeds quite well and his control is improving as he ages. He's generally average at keeping the ball on the ground and in the park. He can start, but he's not hugely durable, as he fades late in the season pretty regularly and he's only topped 120 innings once in his career. He is due somewhere in ...

Bucs trade Resop, sign Morton, tender others

The Pirates’ decision to non-tender Jeff Karstens was the big news of the day, but they still had seven other players to deal with in advance of Friday’s midnight deadline. Chris Resop was traded to Oakland for Zach Stewart, a reliever in high-A ball. Basically, he was non-tendered and the Bucs got a tiny return instead of nothing. I thought there was a chance Resop would be...

Pirates would like Jason Grilli to return, interest as closer elsewhere

The Pittsburgh Pirates are pushing to break .500 in 2013. With a reported signing of Russell Martin as the teams backstop the Pirates are working to re-sign Jason Grilli. Grilli was a key cog in the Pirates bullpen last season setting up for closer Joel Hanrahan. Should the Pirates be successful in re-signing Grilli, he would figure to be first inline between Hanrahan for saves...

First Pitch: Why the Pirates Shouldn’t (Have) Sign(ed) Russell Martin

Earlier today I wrote my “First Pitch” article, titled “Why the Pirates Shouldn’t Sign Russell Martin”. I spent some time taking a deep look at Martin, and looking at the Pirates’ situation. I had it all set up to post at midnight. Then the Pirates signed Martin to a two year, $17 M deal. Nothing really changed with my thoughts below, except for the fact that the move...

Pirates Trying to Retain Grilli

Ken Rosenthal has Ann update on the Pirates and Jason Grilli. https://mobile.twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/2745601049620848644 Grilli would probably require a two year deal. He’d be a great option for the Pirates as a closer if they deal Joel Hanrahan this off season. As a set up man he would be expensive for the Pirates, since he’d probably command $3-4 M per year.
