Spring Training doesn’t start until the middle of February, but the Pittsburgh Pirates are already getting their roster ready with minor league contracts and non-roster invitees.  Today we launched the 2012 Spring Training Tracker. For now it can be used to keep track of all of the non-roster invitees. The tracker has some early estimates on how many position battles there will be, and the breakdown of each position battle. It’s far too early for any of that to be complete, since the Pirates can still add players, and probably will add players in the following month.

Pirates Sign Jeff Clement, Ryota Igarashi

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed first baseman Jeff Clement and right handed pitcher Ryota Igarashi to minor league deals, per a team press release. Both players will receive invites to Spring Training. We heard about Igarashi at the end of last week. The right hander has struggled in his Major League career since coming over from Japan in 2010. Last year he had a 4.66 ERA in 38...

The Pirates Need Another Starting Pitcher

The Pittsburgh Pirates made one addition to their starting rotation this off-season, adding Erik Bedard to a one year deal. Their rotation heading in to the year looks decent, with Jeff Karstens, Charlie Morton, and James McDonald all looking like locks for the rotation. They also have Kevin Correia and Brad Lincoln as the top options for the fifth starter role. That group doesn’t...

Stumbling down the rabbit hole

If you haven't yet, I'd strong recommend you check out the blogs that were able to attend PirateFest over the weekend (Bucs Dugout, Raise the Jolly Roger, Pirates Prospects, McEffect, and RumBunter, with too many posts to link individually at this point) and all of the content that they generated from their time talking to, among others, Neal Huntington, Frank Coonelly, and...

News and notes

There hasn’t been much going on since Piratefest, but here are some tidbits: The Bucs signed Jeff Clement to a minor league deal today. This is possibly the least exciting news ever, but like I said, it’s a slow news week. Clement basically fell off the face of the earth after failing miserably in his chance to become the everyday first baseman once he was acquired from Seattle...
